The surrounding landscape is laced with many beautiful gardens, fountains, and walking paths.

The meditation gardens at the Contemporary Museum in Makaha are laced with winding paths and unexpected views.

Tapias covered the addition’s shady east facade with two layers of cork, which he also placed on the roof of the three bedrooms. “Cork is a natural insulation that can be used without any cladding,” he explains. “It lets the wood breathe, and it’s waterproof.”

The Felds’ new kitchen is clean, modern, and laced with industrial touches (laboratory faucets, lab glass pendant lamps designed by Sand, stainless steel appliances) while animated by materials and crafted elements that radiate warmth: fir floors unearthed from beneath two layers of linoleum; a fireclay farm sink made in England; Carrera marble counters that extend up the walls; walnut shelving; and industrial mechanisms that put the hardware on display, such as the suspended rolling blackboard that conceals the water heater.

The bedroom is elevated around five meters above the forest floor, and the space beneath has—like the green roof—been given back to the Bushveld. “Naturally, this space is shadier than the surrounding forest, so it creates a different microclimate for different species to flourish in that area,” says architect Ant Vervoort. “It’s an area that we have cultivated.”

Covered, veranda-like spaces on both sides provide shady areas to sit and relax.

Three terraces surround and connect each structure with the outdoors. This shady area provides a relaxing space to enjoy the quiet location.

Inside the entry, Natalie experiments with color-blocking on the ceiling. “Between the beams right now, I've painted a little bit of a color-blocking palette, which gives this really cool effect,” says Natalie. The colors seen here are “The Early Stuff” and “Miami Parasol” by Backdrop.

The bedroom closets are painted in soft colors—Dulux Shetland Lace and Lama—to create what Litera describes as “special, warm moments” that add a sense of comfort and closeness to the lofty spaces.

The exterior walls of Casa Quinta da Tília are painted the same color as the tin roof finishing, which is made from local Japanese cedar wood. The broad skylights in architect Pedro Maurício Borges's design not only draw in the wonderful Azores sunshine, but also frame the majestic, parasol-like crown of the linden tree.
