Sliding doors partition a cozy screening room, where the resident can enjoy films and television in the comfort of custom designed furniture.

A spacious screening room is one of the home's new features.

At one end of the deck is an open-air screening room with a retractable projector screen. A built-in couch completes this unique space.

The walls of the veranda become much more markedly curved in the back courtyard. Two bedroom suites are made more private by the slatted screening.

In addition to the wood screening, the house is finished in smooth-trowel stucco with black-framed openings to maintain the high contrast palette inside and out.

Daily on-site events and activities include DJ, live music, curated film screenings, city excursions, and more.

During the day, the experience inside the suite is a play of light and shadow with the sun filtering through the screening, projecting motifs always moving on the floor.

A bonus room with a bar off the private, direct entrance from the three-car garage is ideal for an office, gym, or screening room.

Per the website, the revamped sound stage is located in the back of Ed Woods' old space and would be ideal for private events, screenings, live broadcasts, and AV production.

Hunter's son soaks his feet in the black-tiled spa under the stair that connects the upper dining deck to the ground level patio. Angled boards provide screening but still let in light.

Kranbuehl landscaped the previously forested backyard with a “grass terrace” and masonry walls, so that the exterior felt of a piece with the interiors. Trees and hedges still stand on the perimeter to create natural screening from the neighbors.

Angled, sloping pickets function like Venetian blinds between the board-formed concrete volumes and tall vertical grasses provide another layer of screening. An ipe deck with a waterfall design runs parallel to the pool.

The Henrybuilt Functional Partition Wall provides elegant spatial screening or division of space within the kitchen. It provides both privacy and transparency, creating distinct spaces without dividing them harshly.

The front facade is an unassuming composition of dark-painted timber and privacy screening. "We thought about the idea of the house being like a quiet shadow in the foreground of the reserve," says the firm.

“The screening and this outdoor area off the en suite allowed them a garden at roof level—the green wall was the clients’ idea!” says Litera. “It creates a beautiful buffer between the real world and their sanctuary.”

If you already have a projector, white sheets and some popcorn are all you need to create your own outdoor cinema. Alternatively, you can set up a backyard screening with a monitor, TV stand, and an extension cord.

The top floor opens onto an expansive deck on the north side of the house. An entry yard on its east side provides a seamless connection to the outdoor environment, while ensuring adequate shading and screening for privacy.

Inside, wood adds softness, texture, and warmth while allowing light to filter through. At the stair and master bedroom loft above, timber is used as an architectural screening material which provides some partition between spaces.

Soheil steps into the music and screening room, which is concealed behind a masonry-veneered door. “We were able to hide a lot of the square footage below the main level, but not in a way that would hurt the design,” he says.

“Screening along the east provides some visual protection from the neighbouring properties whilst not compromising any of the views or natural light, which fills the living space and kitchen from morning until late afternoon,” adds Chris.

Max likes to do screenings for friends: “The first time I hosted I showed Planet Earth. Next up is Koyaanisqatsi: Life Out of Balance, a 1982 experimental film by Godfrey Reggio with music by Philip Glass.”

The architects avoided typical, open-plan living in favor of separate, calm, and purposeful spaces. This need for separation and acoustic privacy drove the form of the building, while a layered approach of filtered built elements, such as the steel screening and double-sided fireplaces, still facilitates family interaction.
