The door to Eoghan Mahony’s office is set on a caster and has a hinge that runs the entire ten-foot height.

The highlight of the east wing entry is the oversize front door, fabricated by JIG Design Build, which swings open on a pivot hinge.

On a trip to Naoshima, Japan, the Houston newlyweds behind Robertson Design fell in love with Tadao Ando’s concrete-composed museums. This led the couple to create a residence of their own comprised of a low concrete wall, concrete cube, and box clad in Siberian larch. The indoors are rounded out with white oak, marble, and leather-finished granite.

Howell was creative in his space-saving techniques as well as for practical matters. The handrail for the stairs to the loft was pieced together with lengths of PVC pipe and plumbing hardware.

Most of the home’s furniture was purchased at Restoration Hardware, Circa Modern, or antique shops. “We both love the midcentury designs that we grew up with,” Bronee says. “We wanted furniture that was authentic to us and our personal styles while also fitting into a Catskills hideaway barn.”

The standing shower is set off by etched-glass panels supported by stainless-steel hardware. There is no threshold; instead, the tile within the shower zone slopes down very slightly to a floor trough with a custom stainless-steel grille. The struggle of accessing the inside, however, is offset by Snyder's smart design of an exterior hinged window for easy egg access.

Luis Arturo García, lead designer and partner at EDAA, wanted to create a home that was intimately connected to the natural environment; a home that never closed on itself. To evoke the structure’s past as a horse stable, and provide options for the use of the space, Schaer and his team employed Sing Core sliding barn doors mounted on Krownlab’s Axel hardware. The sliding track runs the full width of the building, allowing residents to open or conceal a bedroom, kitchenette, and entrance to an adjacent 530 square-foot garage, all depending on how the spaces are being used. The kitchenette, seen left, features a Kraus sink and a chrome Grohe Concetto faucet.

After 15 years devoted to building Raydoor, the company launched a hallmark product: single-sized, easy to install, and inspired by the most classic and utilitarian door in American architecture—the barn door. The lightweight, one-size-fits-all BarnDoor sports a single cross-brace construction serving as handle and infused with the urban vibrancy of colors like construction orange, NYPD blue, and Taxicab yellow. Pricing for Tom Kundig’s collection is intended to make architect-designed hardware accessible to consumers. To highlight the pieces’ raw beauty while minimizing costs, the material palette is limited to wax-finished steel.

Brendan Ravenhill Studio Brendan Ravenhill Studio strips away excess and ornamentation in favor of physics. His creativity is on display in his Double Pivot Chandelier, promoted as a Buckminster Fuller-ian “tensegrity structure” that is just under 10 feet long.

The space-saving Murphy tub, as Reckendorfer calls it, was jury-rigged by the previous owner to tuck into a cabinet, which features a water heater and towel rack. Placed on a hinge, it’s easy for one person to lower it into place.

The apartment’s main stairwell, disguised as a Shaker cabinet–meets–Japanese tansu stair, houses storage for kitchen ephemera. The finish is hand-painted and accessorized with raw brass hardware.

A pivot door is one of the home’s unique features. "It’s meant to be more seamless as far as coming in and out. There’s drama in the way it hinges and in the scale of the door," says architect Peter Liang.

Brass Tactics The best way to showcase vintage hardware is to polish it lightly and paint door and window frames a pale white or gray, according to Hayon. Brass hardware also effectively accents mint-colored furniture like the Bisazza Bagno cabinet in the living room, a Hayon design from 2011.

The minimal aesthetic is seen in the galley-style kitchen, where the cabinets have no visible hinges or knobs. The stainless steel appliances are by KitchenAid.

The seats are pivot-mounted, so passergers can turn to face each other in conversation. Each seat contains outlets for charging devices.
