Due to a tiny budget, the duo couldn’t afford to buy furniture and instead used midcentury furnishings they collected in Germany and found on Bergmann’s grandparents’ property. All of the furnishings were measured beforehand, and the modular frames were designed around them to ensure the perfect fit.

Bergmann and Becker traveled from Germany, where they were studying, to the remote lakeside site in Finland to complete the project over three summers. They prefabricated the modular frames in Bergmann’s grandparents’ barn (which had electricity) to avoid weather disruptions.

French doors by Jeld-Wen open the living room to the terrace and the landscape beyond. The mint-green shelving unit is original to Jon's grandparents' house, which originally stood on the property. "It holds much sentimental value," he says.

Built in 1963 by architects Buff & Hensman, the Roth Residence was originally commissioned by the grandparents of L.A. City Mayor Eric Garcetti. In 2006, the home was restored and expanded with post-and-beam construction, sweeping glass walls, midcentury flair, and indoor/outdoor living areas.
