Clock Shadow Building (Milwaukee, Wisconsin: 2012)

Continuum Architects + Planners turned an abandoned brownfield green with this mixed-use development in Milwaukee’s Walker Point neighborhood. Using salvaged material and diverting construction waste from landfills was just the start. Cantilevered construction maximizes space on the upper floors, adding 15% more usable space to the building’s 4,000-square-foot footprint, and the green roof conserves energy while serving as a community space for tenants.

The Stem Hanging Planter presents an elegant play of materials. The planter is made from a spun aluminum bowl that rests on an interior stem—a steel rod that travels through the base of the bowl, through the plant’s soil, and above the bowl where it hangs from a waxed black cotton cord. The result is a decidedly sculptural piece that carefully balances components to create an artful hanging planter.

Rich Brilliant Willing’s Quart Table Lamp is comprised of simple cylindrical volumes. Like a structure of stacked building blocks, the stone base, wood stem, and powder-coated aluminum shade evolve from each other to create a spare, functional fixture with a minimal footprint. The organic nature of the materials—stone, wood, and metal—coupled with minimalist, modern shapes, make Quart an ideal blend of natural and refined design.

Copeland’s MiMo series is a portmanteau for Miami Modernist Architecture, as is revealed in the use of elegant materials alongside minimalist styling. The collection blends wood with metallic details, and is comprised of both solid maple hardwood with a white finish, American black walnut wood, and luxe bronze legs. The juxtaposition of the two hardwoods gives the MiMo Bed added visual interest, while the simple silhouette maintains the minimalist look of the modernist period. A true platform bed, the MiMo is ideal for small rooms, or as a centerpiece in a master suite. Although inspired by Miami modernism, the walnut headboard lends a rich, warm quality to the bed that will communicate with all styles.

An exploration of the possibilities of materials, Souda’s Kreten Side Table employs stretch fabric as a mold for fiberglass reinforced concrete. Due to the nature of the materials—the stretch of the fabric and the weight of the concrete, each table takes on a distinctive form. The result is a truly one-of-a-kind side table that marries both industrial qualities and an organic sensibility.

The Asymmetrical Candle Holders are a functional work of sculpture—The bowl-like silhouette of the holder is designed to reflect light and catch wax drips. And when the holder stands without a candlestick, it creates a striking accent for a tabletop or mantel. Although the candle holders are asymmetrical in nature, they are physically sturdy. Available in three sizes, the holders can be grouped together or used as standalone accents.

Architects Hariri & Hariri thrive on conceptual cross-pollination. Their research into geology and quarrying for the Sternbrauerei residential development in Salzburg, Austria, inspired the faceted, gemlike fixtures they created for AFNY and Rapsel’s Crystalline Bath Collection and, more obviously, their Swarovski-fabricated Kryptonite

jewelry collection.

Among the hallmarks of the plan: a shifted grid of streets (to better buffer pedestrians from strong winds); a plethora of small neighborhood parks amid new housing; an area for urban agriculture; plenty of mixed-use buildings; and 250 acres of open space, parks, and a shoreline promenade.
