The Loop bike rack is a concept and prototype developed by the Federal, an Ottawa-based design consultancy founded by the industrial designers Ian Murchison and Rohan Thakar. (The name is a nod to their home base in Canada’s capital city.) Designed with apartment-living and small spaces in mind, the Norm Coat Hanger is a sleek, powder-coated steel coat stand with a small footprint. The top platform can be used to hold a hat, keys, and sunglasses, while the lower platform can prop up a pair of shoes or a bag. Near the top of the stand, there is a hook for hanging jackets, which also extends back to the wall, giving an extra place for draping a scarf or hanging a coat from a hanger.

The Unit Coat Rack from Strand Design is designed to bring a sturdy storage solution for all of your interior spaces, from entryways and mudrooms to bedrooms and playrooms. With a thin profile, the Unit Rack can even fit inside a closet or on the back of a door. The streamlined rack is made from locally sourced white oak wood and three powder-coated steel wire hooks that are molded to accommodate a variety of items, including jackets, scarves, purses, or backpacks.

Christina Liljenberg Halstrøm's Georg Coat Rack 115, for Skagerak, hugs the wall and supports dozens of coat hangers (angled away from the wall). Clothing is one of the most voluminous challenges though this system doesn't sacrifice easy sorting and selecting of mulitple clothing articles for square footage.

Paola Navone's Black 94 coat rack is black bamboo, stone and orange cotton pompoms. Designed for Gervasoni, the Black 94 is understated and naturally inspired, resembling freshwater reeds.

From Plywood Office, the Rack of Coats takes a necessary household accessory—a coat rack—and reimagines it as sculpture. The Rack of Coats is defined by its graceful curves, which are created from steam-bent solid wood that is sourced domestically from a small Wisconsin mill. Beneath the curved wood coat hooks, the Rack of Coats includes a convenient table, providing storage space for keys, coins, mobile phones, or even a purse or work bag.

As well-suited to an office lobby as it is to a child's playroom, Mario Mazzer's coat rack for Bonaldo comes in colors adapted to any environment. The Tree's many branches await the outer trappings of those traipsing in from outdoors.

Padwick’s “playful nature” comes through in many of his creations, including the delightfully-named Chuckle Bin, or the Sticks Coat Stand. “The designs have a warmth and humor that come through, but they are not comical or jokes,” notes Padwick. The Pierrot Coat Stand from Alessi is an innovative storage furnishing that is at once light and sturdy. The Coat Stand features a lightweight, linear composition that is supported by three legs that, while thin, provide a stable, balanced base. Designed by Pauline Deltour, the coat stand is made from beech wood with grey resin joints. Pierrot means “sparrow” in French, which is carried through in Deltour’s design—the base and pegs resemble a bird’s foot.

The Penny Coat stand is unconventional and charismatic.

Though designed for children, Charles and Ray Eames' Hang-It-All coat rack suits modernists of any age. Herman Miller also offers the playful piece in all-white or all-black models.

Line Depping's Elements, a bent ash coat rack, was shown in the Danish Mindcraft exhibition curated by Nina Tolstrup in 2014. A similar product, a series of bent ash wall hooks, has been picked up by Wrong for Hay.

Lock kids' coat stand by Sylvain Willenz for Tamawa

Houston-based designer Barbara Hill is known for a stripped-down aesthetic that blends art-world cachet with Texas modernism. Vitra’s Slow chair sits in front of a powder-coated-steel bookcase made by Hill’s go-to fabricator, George Sacaris; it was originally built for the Houston house.

Simultaneously sculptural and pragmatic, the undulating form of the W Magazine stand’s molded plywood is both pleasing and useful. It’s compact enough for small spaces, though you may be loath to cover up the figurative grain pattern of the walnut with your magazines. $119-$129

This simple plastic-and-aluminum bottle rack, designed with a small footprint and made to be easily stacked, is about as straightforward and crowd-pleasing as a bottle of good cheap merlot.
