The Loop bike rack is a concept and prototype developed by the Federal, an Ottawa-based design consultancy founded by the industrial designers Ian Murchison and Rohan Thakar. (The name is a nod to their home base in Canada’s capital city.) With its Stropp Coat Hook, by Lassen completely redefines traditional hanging pegs and hooks. Each Stopp is comprised of a luxurious leather loop and metallic peg. Items can be hung through the loop or over the peg. Coats and other clothing can be placed on a hanger and hung from the loop as well.

The larger volume of the addition, consisting of kitchen, living, and dining spaces, loops around to the smaller bedroom through a wooden passage. The same ipe, with differing finishes, is used for both the interior and exterior. Expansive sliding glass doors by Fleetwood dramatically open up the living space to the outdoors.

Designed to accommodate virtually any user, the bathroom comprises two separate areas—one for bathing and showering, and one with a toilet, vanity, and touchscreen smart mirror. A closed-loop water recycling system in the shower cuts down on water usage by 90 percent compared to standard showers.

The DROPLET has a kitchen at the rear which includes an acrylic, easy-to-clean countertop and backsplash; two LED lamps; a 12-volt slide-out fridge; a two-burner propane cooking stove; and drawers for storage. The sink is deep enough for dishes, and a closed-loop water system is hand-pump operated.

The plan features a wastewater-treating, energy-producing transportation loop, places a magnetic levitation railway within the freeway right of way.

Tom and Kate own the top two floors of the building. On the lower level, in the double-height foyer, Milo Baughman’s Recliner 74 is positioned beneath Rudi Double Loop pendants by Lukas Peet for Roll & Hill. The floor lamp is a custom piece that De Angelis Designs adapted from a vintage salon hood dryer.
