The three levels of the house transition from public to private: The ground floor is composed of the kitchen and living-dining area; the bathroom and closet occupy the mezzanine, accessed by a ship’s ladder; and the sleeping loft hovers a couple steps above. The seminal 1970s tome A Pattern Language, written by Christopher Alexander, Sara Ishikawa, and Murray Silverstein, inspired the layout. “I’m a huge proponent of the [book],” says Azevedo. “I like the ideas of a bed as an alcove, natural light on two sides of a room, varying ceiling heights, and different levels of privacy.”

The extended clan, which includes about two dozen members, collaborated with Gray Organschi Architecture to design an inclusive home for three generations.

Challenged by the dimensions of the narrow lot, the team worked through significant programmatic and logistical constraints during the design and construction process. The final concept for the layout was a modern take on the side hall plan. The living spaces are stretched back deep into the lot, and strategically raised above grade to allow sunlight to penetrate into multiple living spaces. The multifunctional courtyard serves as outdoor workspace, gardening area, children's play area, and covered parking during winter months.

Bucket is currently trying to get funding for the Portland Press on the site Crowd Supply. Part of their pitch is that the Portland Press is a made-in-America product whose most delicate part is easily replaced. "The Portland Press is a french press for a Mason jar, made in the state of Oregon, out of materials sourced in the USA. It’s a simple, clean, practical design made out of fundamental materials: glass, wool, steel, wood. Most importantly, the Mason jar is easy to replace if it breaks, and the rest of the Portland Press is backed with a lifetime warranty."

Despite the cast-on-site concrete dividers, there's still an airy sense of space; the dividers support, instead of overwhelm. This approach came from the architects' constant sense of experimentation and playfulness, a deliberate approach that helped them find new ways to use recycled and salvaged materials.

"It was supposed to be as naked as possible," says Alexandru Popescu, one of the members of R3Architetti who helped design and build the 3 Vaults apartment. "The furniture is absolutely included in the architecture; it’s more like an indoor landscape instead of a typical open plan." The kitchen exemplifies their approach, with textured concrete walls contrasting with wood panels and salvaged industrial lighting. The table, custom built by R3Architetti, is made in part from pipes procured from one of their fathers, a plumber.

Carpenter describes the FSC-certified cypress structure as part sculpture, part architecture, and part landscape.

Connected to the main house by a narrow bridge, a three-story cedar tower with a sauna at its base recalls a tree house. The screened-in second level includes a table and chairs for enjoying an outdoor meal, while a swing on the tower’s top level provides a perch to take in the surrounding birch trees.

With the doors flung wide open, the Deams' outdoor space truly functions as an adjunct living room at the core of the home. The feeling of an outdoor room is reinforced by the linearity and evenness of the concrete patio surface, which was constructed with Stepstone's Narrow Modular Pavers. "I actually discovered them at Dwell on Design in 2006," Lara says. The three-inch-wide pavers are available in multiple lengths and in 12 different shades.

The bathroom, which along with the laundry room is part of Siegel's renovated master bedroom.

Linda Taalman and Alan Koch, of Taalman Koch Architects, completed work on their glass iT House, a lovely, minimal home that tests the limits of living lightly on the land in the desert near Joshua Tree National Park. The bath and basin in the bathroom are by Duravit, and the orange wall is by Three Form.

The Botanica Bud Vase Trio is a charming collection of three small vases, cast in an inviting palette of grey, yellow, and pink. These petite vases are designed to hold a large single bloom or a few buds with thin stems. The smallest vase in the trio has the widest mouth, and can hold several shallow flowers. The trio can be grouped as a traditional centerpiece or collected together on a mantel, and can also be separated and used in different parts of the home to create small accents wherever a cheerful accessory is needed.

The Black Wall Mirrors are a sculptural wall hanging. Each mirror in the series is structured in a semisphere, adding depth to the mirror. The glass has a slight black tint finish, which gives off a clean reflection with a subtle darkened tone.

Generous concrete pavers lead to the entrance. The home's angles are typical of the midcentury homes in the neighborhood.

Permeable hardscaping retains moisture and helps reduce the need for watering.

Neon-green sedum matches the front door. The design team also includes Courtney McRickard and Kyle Hebel; the contractor was Jesse Young of Landwise Colorado.

High-gloss pots from Vondom contain drought-tolerant sedum. All told, the landscaping project came in under the $20,000 budget.

The narrow Marlborough House, situated on an infill lot in Toronto, features a three-story void in the center that lets light into the interior rooms.

While the aesthetic was meant to convey a blank slate, historical touches abound inside. Pipes were restored from Gian Nicola Ricci's father's plumbing company, industrial lights from an old second-hand store found a new life, and outside of a few IKEA pieces, the furniture was all custom-built, mostly from salvaged material.

Framed by planes of wood, as well as a large pair of windows, the entryway exudes warmth.

A panorama shows how highlights within the interior landscape define different sections of the apartment, almost a color-coded progression from work to dining to rest.

Filled with crisp lines and textural contrasts, the interior plan widens the small apartment by setting it apart, creating alcoves, living spaces, and sculptural dimension within the open white space.
