A movable wall clad in wainscoting on one side slides along tracks in the dining-room ceiling, dividing the room into a meeting space and a library. The Shiro Simple Modern Pendant lights can be easily removed and reattached after moving the wall.

A mirror near the mailboxes in the lobby gives the illusion of more space. A team from Lighting Planners Associates, based in Japan, added the uplights behind the bench for effect. The architectural firm left the ceilings raw concrete to make the space "more enigmatic," says Schultz.

Niki Weber and J.P. Guiseppi were booted from their rental in Venice, California, with only a month’s notice. In the frantic search that followed, the pair bought the first property they visited: a hillside residence in the Silver Lake neighborhood of L.A. The plot had enough space down slope to install an ADU. Putting their hard years of renting to good effect, the pair hired Cover, a Los Angeles-based start-up specializing in prefab backyard homes, to build the rental they wish they had lived in as tenants.

A “Welcome to Leucadia!” sign welcomes visitors to the quaint block where Surfhouse sits. It borders a community coffee joint called Coffee Coffee, as well as Surfy Surfy, an old-school surf shop that began as a surf blog in 2005 where JP St Pierre documented his family surfboard factory called Moonlight Glassing. In 2010, Pierre teamed up with a few of his surf buddies to open up Surfy Surfy, which is the same group that opened up Coffee Coffee. Both destinations were part of a community effort to make sure local businesses continue to rule there.

Rota is a minimalist light created by London-based designers Minimalux. Rota is a table or floor lamp made from aluminum discs, frosted acrylic rings, and precision machined brass rods. The light is finished with powder-coated white RAL 9003 with a two meter long cable with an inline dimmer. The light is available in a UK, Euro, or JP/US plug. Each product is conceived and developed by Minimalux and its collaborators from a studio buried deep underground in the heart of East London. Within this laboratory-like environment, the principals of formal reduction are pushed to the extreme whilst material, process, and finishing considerations are specified at the highest level.

Kinetic Desk by Stir

Already a tech darling, this adjustable height productivity tool could be called the quantified desk. It aims to make the phrase “tied to your desk” a good thing; with Fitbit connectivity, a smooth user interface and a “whisper breath system” that bumps the surface up to encourage more standing, it’s the high-tech solution to the health issues that come from sitting behind a screen all day. CEO and ex-Apple engineer JP Labrosse wanted to create something that invites people to move with subtle engagement and create products that “support people’s best work.” (For more flexible office solutions, read Dwell's June 2014 essay on the changing workplace.)

ITO BINDERY
Hailing from Japan, ITO BINDERY makes incredible paper products by hand. For the past several years I’ve become more enamored with Japanese stationery and ITO is at the top of my list. Their notebooks use incredibly thin paper that is durable with no bleed-through. Their drawing and desk pads are trimmed in durable, smartly-colored chipboard and are perfect to draw, doodle, write, and capture notes with. If you outside the U.S., you can browse ITO BINDERY’s site below and find a stockist in your area. If you are ordering from the U.S. I would recommend Yoseka Stationery’s curated collection of ITO goods.

CLASS is a minimalist space located in Tokyo, Japan, designed by JP architects. The project is a renovation of a vintage one-room apartment. The architect divided the space into two sections – a workspace and living space – and applied a surface treatment of “glossy / matte” on each respective area. Residents can come and go through either area easily, but clear boundaries are set between the two. During the day, natural sunlight entering the work-space through the south-east window creates strong reflected rays. At nightfall, the boundary of glaze becomes thinner as if sleeping, the sense of unity of the whole room emerges. In the free space, all furniture (bench, table, and sofa-bed) is pull-down style so that it could be used in a versatile way.
