The addition of a skylight lets sunlight wash over jade-green tile that's laid in a herringbone pattern in the bathroom.

Before: The couple used the home’s original foundation and added a small addition of about 700 square feet, for a new total of 3610 square feet.

The kitchen features exposed wooden beams, textured concrete walls, porcelain countertops, blackened walnut cabinets, walnut bar stools, and antique jade vases.

A bespoke golden runner with a tiger illustration drawn by a member of the design team welcomes guests in the entry. The pendant is jade Morano glass with gold fringe.

The flooring—purple jade marble tile from Creekside Tile—is the show-stopper in the master bath. There's also a custom vanity and a Top Bath tub.

“I’m the queen of Ikea cabinets,” laughs Jade. She commissioned custom birch-veneer plywood for the doors from L.A.’s Anderson Plywood. While she was budget-conscious in many ways, she also is willing to splurge where it counts. “Hardware is where I spend money. That’s where people touch and feel it,” she says. “It’s important to me that it feels significant.” Here, pulls and knobs come from Mockett. The countertop is a man-made resin from Arizona Tiles in La Quinta.

Created for a design showcase in São Paulo, Loft Ninho is a warm, oak-wrapped space with an en suite bedroom box. The bookshelf separating the bedroom and bathroom is the "Icon" system from "Sollos" by Brazilian designer Jader Almeida, and creates a natural delineation.

Jade green paint covers one of the walls in the bedroom, where the architects and the designer balanced classic and contemporary aesthetics. "Our client is always out, working late or traveling abroad," Hostache says. "This is the cozy place she needed when she’s ready to crash."

The home’s living room can be kept open to the elements, or sectioned off with sliding glass walls. A natural concrete slab acts as an exterior barrier, and freijó wood and track lighting define the interior space. C10 sofa by Marcus Ferreira and vintage Poltrona Molé chair by Sergio Rodrigues provide casual seating. Across the partition wall, a Jader Almeida table anchors the dining room.

The bedrooms are separated by two bathrooms, a layout that Jade liked for its privacy.

Artist Lisa Bartelson is one of Jade's clients, and traded her these oversized works in exchange for some design work.

In an apartment overlooking São Paulo’s Ibirapuera Park—completed in 1954 to commemorate the city’s 400th anniversary—the furniture is as distinctive as the view. Architect Flavio Castro of FCstudio worked closely with the residents to update and outfit the home, which is appointed with a mix of contemporary and Brazilian modern classics. A pair of Sérgio Rodrigues’s Paraty armchairs (in foreground)—designed for Brasilia’s Itamaraty Palace in 1963—face a duo of Jader Almeida’s Isa armchairs in the living area. LED lights are hidden behind ceiling joists. Jade snagged some Design Within Reach Theatre sofas on Craigslist for $200 and had them reupholstered.

Does a home in Palm Springs need to conform to midcentury design? London transplant and homeowner of a renovated midcentury modern house Jade Spalding knew how she felt: "I wanted to stay true to the midcentury modern vibe, of course, but also make it my own. I think sometimes, especially in Palm Springs, people can be a bit serious about midcentury design and so they stick to a very in-the-box approach when renovating. I really wanted to have a bit of fun with it and break a few rules! Who says midcentury can't branch out a bit!?"

Though Jade had the backyard re-graded, the previous owner’s dirt bike tracks had really altered the landscape. When it rained one day, there was a bowl that remained and held water — which sparked an idea in Jade. “I come from a design practice where everything is rectangular and linear, but there was this opportunity to have a natural, seasonal pond,” she says. “It made me uncomfortable, but I still wanted to do it.”
