Steam 1886 directed by Adrian Lazarus and Nicky Felbert, produced by Mercury ProductionsThis short fashion film won the Most Beautiful Object in South Africa competition, which the public votes for via text messaging. Shot on location at Cape Town’s Truth Coffee café, its steampunk aesthetic was designed by Haldane Martin. It’s the first year that a film has been nominated (feature-length Four Corners was also in the running), which seems fitting, given that this was also the inaugural year of the Design Indaba Film Festival. The dozen nominees for Most Beautiful Object in South Africa spanned a wide number of genres, including media and tech, as well as the more expected furniture, dresses, and jewelry.

Amanda: Design in Film

I spent a very pleasant 11 minutes this morning previewing this mish-mash of modern homes appearing in films across many decades and eras. I appreciate the time it took to edit this one together—there are tons of homes represented.

Upon entering the store, the customer is transported into a busy market, much like those in Mexico, where he or she can purchase food products, housewares, utensils, etc. The space is brought up to date through the scupltural wood canopy that moves the eye toward the center of the space.

What do you wish was easier to make and source in the USA?

I would love to see more U.S.-made fabrics and textiles. With the loss of 650 textile mills in the USA between 1997 and 2009, it has been difficult for our makers to find skilled weavers and leather workers. Hopefully over time we can add more mills, as is being done in the South now, and rebuild the artisan skill set. Mesa Pendleton Wool Pillow, $60.

What everyday item would you like to see made domestically?

Having more electronic manufacturing in the USA would make it easier for startups to prototype, make rapid adjustments to the product, and scale up quickly. Some of this has started to happen with reshoring from Asia due to the rising transportation costs and overseas labor costs, as well as the need for more flexible manufacturing. Bringing back a single product like the iPhone would bring a significant number of jobs back to the U.S. and help reestablish the working middle class in America. Pendleton Wool and Leather Tote, $225.

The best place in the city to find knick nacks and jewelry, Greenmarket Square is also one of your best bets for picking up traditional textiles. During our recent trip we were able to find everything from children’s patterned dresses from the Congo to colorful swatches from Malawi. However, if you’re going to venture don’t go wide-eyed—this will be your best place to haggle for a good deal.
