At the Mill Valley home designed by architect Chris Deam for residents Jack and Ellen Corrigan, the view begins from the top. Sun studies of the steeply sloped site informed the choice for a standing-seam metal, diagonal ridge roof, which Chris refers to as the home’s “fifth facade”.

After deeming the original structure unfit for renovation, Chris worked with the Corrigans to raze it and rebuild. With the addition of a lower level, the top floor now sits higher, with clarified sight lines. In the kitchen, a pass-through window connects to the deck, where the couple often entertain; Chris, Jack, Ellen, and Lara Deam enjoy the view.

Chris designed a custom built-in desk in the den for Ellen, who often works from home.

Like the other larger upstairs units, Puzio’s includes two loft spaces flanking the kitchen, whereas those below have one.

At 700 square feet, Chris and Ady's cottage had to make economical use of space—like the bar-height dining table doubling as a cooking countertop.

Inspiration can be found everywhere: For Massproductions’ Chris Martin, the idea to the design of the Mega daybed came while he was looking at freshly baked bread on a wire rack at his local bakery. Both bread and leisure furniture represent comfort, life and stability, according to Martin. Plump cushions are enclosed and lifted by thin steel tube side panels.

The 510 Cabin is one of Leggitt's designs, executed with the help of student apprentices.

Storage, fixtures, and appliances are all housed within the monochromatic steel modules in the McCourt Townhouse. "It’s all freestanding, even the unit with the sink in it," says homeowner Chris McCourt. "Two blokes unpacked and fitted it all in a day."

Edgeland House, built on a cliff-top lot in Austin by architect Thomas Bercy for lawyer and writer Chris Brown, is topped by a living roof that helps it blend into the landscape. The concrete, steel, and glass house is divided into two distinct public and private halves.

Removing the exterior white siding and creating a new cantilevered concrete stoop was the first order of business. "Both Julie and Chris being structural engineers, I thought we should show off what they do with this cantilevered concrete slab for the new front stoop,
