The Joseph Joseph Index Plus replaces that clunky counter-space-hogging knife block and thick, heavy cutting board by combining the knife and cutting board storage into one slim design. It's also great for reducing the chance of cross-contamination when working in close quarters with its four color coded cutting boards and matching knives.

The newest completed building on campus is the VitraHaus, designed by Basel-based firm Herzog & de Meuron in 2010. The structure features seven balancing longhouses, and its design took the world by storm when first presented and then completed. The entire building is made of poured-in-place concrete and covered with a gray plaster on top and boasts local fir siding at its base. (Check back soon for a post highlighting the VitraHaus.)

A standout in the exhibition—engraved glass works by Berlin–based designer Mark Braun. Created for the famed Austrian glass company Lobmeyr, the series, called Fortune, delicately depicts topography and other scenes from nature. The designer says his creations are meant to emphasize the "essential wealth in everyday life."

One of my favorite booths this year was by DuPont. Rather than displaying panels of their new surfaces, the company featured a series of vignettes featuring its Corian and Zodiaq materials. Here is the new Corian color Hazelnut.

Recommended: a set of four linen napkins ($60), striped denim pouches with pockets ($60), SmartPly desk accessories ($25-$45), and "Pining for You" poster-sized Valentine's cards ($20).

Lighting designer Yuri Kinoshita, who is based in Seattle, says that she can create one of her paper-and-steel creations in one day if she "stays awake all the night."

SCI-Arc and Caltech teamed up to create this uber conceptual "outsulated" home called CHIP, which stands for "Compact Hyper-Insulated Prototype. Underneath the layer of white architectural-grade vinyl is 15 inches of batted denim insulation. Japanese designer Yota Kakuda, who has worked for Ross Lovegrove and who creates products for MUJI, debuted a collection entitled Tenon. Consisting of timber pieces assembled utilizing tenon joints and angular construction methodology, the offerings include a step stool, a bench, side tables and chairs.
