Fashioned with mortise and tenon joints, and buttressed with recycled, powder-coated steel, this Milwaukee-made, sustainably sourced walnut stool is destined to become a modern classic. Poet Stool by Misewell.

The owners toured this home, which surrounds a mature tipu tipu tree, while visiting relatives for the day. The brick is original to the 1947 construction.

The rubber-dipped steel base, aluminum neck, and spun shade keep the Eileen lamp ($1,200) balanced when leaning against a wall or in a corner.

The Conrad coffee table has a solid walnut top and legs; each leg snaps into the stamped steel bracket without the use of hardware.

The steel Sixagon can be used as a stool, side table, or any other surface. It's got a powder-coated surface, available in black, blue, cream and yellow.

Sliding doors by Quantum were made to look like the original panes that couldn't be saved, and they lead to a fire pit outside.

New zoning allowed for a zero-lot-line structure, but required a public storefront, which Carpenter uses as an art gallery.

The new Spruce clothes tree ($410) comes in ivory or black steel. Says Paul: "Spruce is a design that has such a simple, graphic silhouette that it fits well in almost any architectural setting. From a functionality standpoint, it can earn its keep nearly anywhere in your house. We recommend entryway, bedroom, office, and bathrooms."

Wisconsin. Misewell's approach to modern furniture-making prioritizes ease of assembly. Each leg of the walnut Conrad coffee table snaps effortlessly into a steel bracket, which is available in a range of colors.

Their new Tokyo lights (from $245) are made of recycled steel and come in two sizes, eight inches and 18 inches, each topped with an oatmeal-colored rolled-edge shade. "When designing the Tokyo Lamp, our goal was to create something with personality," says Paul. "The ability to tweak the neck angle and pivot the shade entices users to interact with and adjust Tokyo’s stance."

Brothers Vincent and Paul Georgeson take an unconventional approach to expanding their nascent line of furniture: They take a look around their respective homes and tally what they need, and then design those pieces themselves. "We have added several new products that enhance and add functionality to the spaces we live in," says Paul. "Our additions include a versatile coat stand, a multipurpose bench, an adjustable lamp, a robust bar stool and an essential desk."

Stretch from Misewell Modern FurnitureIf a coat rack was a luxury item (and who’s to say it’s not?) we would go for this hand-crafted version from Misewell that is made from silky-smooth walnut with pinwheel joinery for $1,180. However, Misewell now offers Spruce, at the slightly more reasonable price of $410.

See Arch restored the exterior fireplace wall and painted it a deep blue hue to match the repainted blue timber cladding.

The walnut Grain desk ($1,775) and tomato-colored Sixagon stool ($350) are perfect companions. The Sixagon also works perfectly as a side table.

Organic, hand-painted wallpaper is still going strong in many design quarters. This range by Eskayel, designed by Shanan Campanaro, also comes in an eco-friendly contract version, made of 31% post-consumer recycled content with a Class “A” fire rating and low VOC emissions.

insidenorway's prototype exhibition at ICFF, called New Norwegian Design: Plain and Simple, was curated by Paul Makovsky of Metropolis. One of the neatest pieces (among many) was a Røros Tweed blanket designed by architecture firm Snøhetta (shown at right), which folds into a shape that perfectly emulates the practice's logo.

The three legs on the Poet Stool ($620) are connected to the walnut seat using mortise and tenon joints, a classic and durable construction method. Made of the same materials, but to different effect, the Lockwood chair ($510) has a shaped solid wood seat and formed steel back.

RUX Design, out of Manhattan, designed these modular LED lamps called Stickbulbs.
