Today, the Grasshopper lamp is undoubtedly Greta Grossman's most famous design. Introduced in 1947, the Grasshopper is both sophisticated and unobtrusive, which allows it to work well on its own and when paired with other designs.

A vintage wood lamp and turned bowl stands next to the bed. "We wanted to incorporate elements used in residential homes," Hollis says of the eclectic medley of accessories and furnishings in the space. "These would be items that you would collect over time. They don't exactly match, but they all work together—they create a relaxed casual environment while still elevating the interior and amenities to what you expect from a world-class luxury property."

Pilu by German designer Leoni Werle is a table and a floor lamp in one. An oddly shaped oak base allows the lamp to toggle between two positions. The connection between shade and base is jointed, allowing the beam to be directed downwards even with the lamp is in the angled position.

SPUN TABLE LAMP Simple and fluid, the Spun Table Light from designer Sebastian Wrong for FLOS fuses modern manufacturing with timeless craftsmanship. GOLDMAN TABLE LAMP A modern take on an old classic, the Goldman Table Lamp is a high-powered desk lamp with a minimal footprint. The Goldman Lamp features a high gloss shine, so while its slight frame allows it to blend into existing office décor, its shine makes it a standout piece. Shine a Light Benshetrit’s table lamp, for the lighting and furniture company .MGX by Materialise uses QuaDror’s infinitely scalable geometry to create a honeycomb of 1,200 modules that fits over a metal base holding a 40-watt halogen bulb. The lamp, which arrives flat and expands, accordion-like, when lifted, is manufactured via selective laser sintering (SLS), a 3-D printing process that uses a laser to solidify layer upon layer of powdered resin particles. “When you buy the lamp, you get a disc with the file on it, so if it breaks, you can ‘reprint’ it,” Benshetrit says.

Trapeze Table Lamp by Peter Stathis “It’s an absolutely sculptural piece where the form and function are beautifully married. It’s a production piece by a company that Peter founded to produce this light. The joints are ball-and-socket, and theres a wire going between the different arms allowing for 360-degree movement. It’s so articulating and fluid, there’s an almost human-like feel to the way the limbs move on it. One of the few table lamps that can look good on the bedside table or as a desk lamp.”

The warm material palette extends to Berryman’s bedroom. Like the rest of the apartment, it features work by New York designers, including a custom wood bed by Asher Israelow and a Table Light desk lamp by Lindsey Adelman.

The kitchen table.

The courtyard acts like an outdoor living room, where the Arnolds’ daughter, Josie, plays freely, safe from nearby traffic. The family dines here most of the year at the custom-designed wood-and-steel table. The picnic table set reappropriates the century-old eucalyptus tree that once grew on the site.

Anglepoise has reissued this industrial favorite created in 1934 by factory engineer George Carwardine. Ideal for task lighting, the 1227 has long been considered a classic for its fine construction and easy adjustability. This utility lamp is also available in three other colors.

Designed by innovators Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec for FLOS, the Piani Table Lamp offers stylish and modern asymmetry for the home or work environment. Made of injection printed ABS, this unique lamp provides both direct and ambient light with energy-efficient LED technology.

Grossman made a name for herself in the male-dominated architecture scene in Los Angeles, saying working as a female architect "kept you on your toes. You had to be a step ahead or else."

Cal and Macy enjoy a snack from Mom at the almost 14-foot-long walnut slab table sourced from Arborica in Marshall, California. The wood came from a tree that fell into a Palo Alto, California, street. A trio of Tom Dixon Beat Lamps provide the perfect counterpoint to a slew of black plastic Eames shell chairs from Herman Miller.

Items that made the cut include a sofa from the Swedish company Ire; an Eames side table; a wall-mounted Artemide light; and a Moser pendant from Louis Poulsen.

Furniture throughout the house echoes the soft materiality of the architectural details, which include original pine floorboards refinished with lye and wood soap. The music room armchair and footstool are vintage, from Ercol; the blue-gray Grasshopper floor lamp is by Greta Grossman from Gubi.

As the brand continutes to grow internationally—they now have stores in New Zealand and Melbourne, Australia—their focus remains local. All pieces, like the Line table and table lamp, both seen here in black, are manufactured by Shelling and his team of artisans in their Clevedon studio.

The living room has a vintage Milo Baughman couch with cushions fashioned from Angora mohair from Architex. The coffee table is vintage, as is the side table base, given a custom stone top. A Seneca Table Lamp is by Danny Kaplan, while the artwork over the couch is by Patton Miller.

Grossman's Grasshopper lamp remains one of the most popular midcentury lighting designs. Here, displayed in the Conran Shop, Marylebone, it is matched with a Piano Alto modular sofa and the Prism chandelier designed by Nathalie Dewez.
