Henry and Emily share a bedroom and a bunkbed made by Ducduc, an American furniture company. Thanks to panel doors that slide into the walls, the bedrooms balance privacy with openness to the rest of the house. With a guestroom and trundle beds in the kids’ rooms, the 1,357-square-foot house can easily sleep four adults and five children—more if people crash on the couches.

Oeuf has remained a leader in the industry, producing solid, quality furniture. Plus they are a great company. (I don't mean to give too much "Oeuf love" but this company in their design process, production, and in their foundation epitomizes "modern nursery.")

The previous layout felt like a maze with a ton of little rooms. With the new floor plan, each of the couple’s children has their own bedroom. The crib is by Oeuf.

When they needed more room for visiting children and grandkids, Karen and Rick Hawkins paid homage to a once common Midwestern sight, the corn crib, by adding to their family farm.

Amy: Because I got pregnant shortly after we started the design process, it became clear that we would need details that weren't too austere, complicated, or unsafe. We use FLOR rugs throughout, knowing that spills are our new way of life—and changing out tiles makes it easier not to sweat it. The crib is from Land of Nod and the bookshelf is vintage, which Chris refurbished.

The dinette table converts to a baby crib with railings.

Here, two versions of the modern, clean-lined baby's changing table and dresser. On the left, Ducduc's hardwood Austin 3-Drawer Changer ($1595) and on the right, the Skip Changer Dresser by Babyletto, which combines New Zealand hardwood and MDF ($399). Both come with antitip hardware and removable changing trays. The price difference can be attributed to Ducduc's made-in-the-USA hardwood construction with rabbited joints and hand craftsmanship.
