Earth House is dedicated to Dong-joo Yoon, a Korean poet who died as a political prisoner in Japan during WWII.

“My grandfather, George Fasullo, was an architect who died before I was born,” says architect Ryan Bollom. “My mom used both of our drawings as wallpaper in the secondary living space.” During the lockdown, Bollom formed an extended bubble with his parents, and he and his wife, also an architect, used the space as an office.

Balogh, who died in 2006, was a celebrated local architect. He was also credited for designing an estimated 150 structures throughout Michigan, Illinois, and Arizona.

The top of the mezzanine wall peels away, allowing the space to remain somewhat open. It also provides an opportunity to inset a flush, recessed, flexible LED light into the top of the wall as it dies into the ceiling.

The renovated home maintains its original layout. To refresh the dated appearance of the space, Stonefox added cedar tongue-and-groove panels to the ceiling and refinished the floors. The living room rug is from Creative Matters, the WL Daybed is from Niedermaier, and the circular coffee table is a Tie and Die model from Holly Hunt.

These are the dies that SPN uses to cut the felt flowers for Nanimarquina. The dies are placed in an iron press and work much like cookie-cutters–cleanly slicing the patterns from the felt. When the dies no longer provide crisp cuts, they are replaced.

This tiny house set on the bucolic Mirror Lake in Wisconsin is balanced on the edge of a steep hill and measures only 880 square feet. The "flying roof" seems to hang in space without support. Wright was already in his 90s when Seth Peterson asked him to design the cottage, and the 1958 building was Wright’s last Wisconsin project. Wright died in April 1959, before construction was completed.

Perhaps a more ordered precursor for the New Museum in New York, this Dior shop in Tokyo from 2003 is a good example of SANAA's subtle shift in scale, color, and porousness.

The interior features midcentury trimmings like a Noguchi coffee table and a George Nelson-esque sun clock. The silver-plated Christmas tree is made of die cut textured gelatin sheets stacked with ditalini pasta. The palm tree trunks are cinnamon sticks while the leaves are die cut wafer paper.

Villain Arjen Rudd’s modern, canyon-top lair was an integral part of the Lethal Weapon 2 screenplay from the very beginning. Its role only grew larger as the more downbeat first draft of Shane Black’s script (Gibson’s Riggs was originally fated to die at the end) was revised by Black’s successor, Jeffrey Boam. The challenge was finding an existing Los Angeles–area structure that matched the one imagined on the page. A dying hemlock tree on the property was milled to create planks for the floating staircase.
