DAUVILLE GOLD GLAZED BOWLS The Dauville hand-made nesting bowls are luxe and sophisticated in any setting. Just the splash of gold that everyone needs.

Triple-glazed, frosted windows emit soft, filtered light against pale gray and blue surfaces inthe master bathroom. Lucian Field matte-glass and Lucian Mosaics penny round tiles, both by Ann Sacks, line the floor and walls.

Doors and triple-glazed casement windows from Loewen work hard to form a tight thermal envelope.

A handful of boxy protrusions on the facade give the modernist residence an additional three-dimensionality. The colorful window frames and door also give variety and depth to the gray structure.

The food bowls are as smart as they are simple. Contour lines are embossed on the inside to indicate how much food or water the pet has consumed. The bowls not only come in three different sizes, but matching plant pots help create a more cohesive space between the products and the interior.

Once past the main threshold, the house opens up to the outside, literally and figuratively. Three courtyards built around existing trees flow seamlessly into a series of rooms with glazed walls and sliding glass doors.

Jessica Helgerson Interior Design, with project manager and lead designer Emily Kudsen Leland at the helm, remade a Portland abode with a crisp paint palette: Benjamin Moore’s Wrought Iron for the cladding and Venetian Gold for the front door. The home was originally designed by Saul Zaik in Southwest Portland, complete with a wood-clad exterior, in 1956. As part of the renovation, landscape design was completed by Lilyvilla Gardens.

The bowls come in two sizes, the smaller one at 9 inches diameter is made from 1,000 GB pounds and the larger one at approximately 20 inches diameter is made from 3,000 GB pounds.

Song collaborated with natural dyer Kristine Vejar on a line of indigo-dyed maple bowls for March. "She is an expert natural dyer, a teacher and an artist who's received numerous accolades for her work," she says. "Vejar spent some time as a participatory artist in the Berkeley Art Museum's The Possible exhibit. I had not worked with traditional Japanese indigo dying before but have had some curiosity to dying wood with a natural dye, instead of chemical dyes."

A Clear Advantage Modernists love glass, but large windows can be massive energy-wasters, letting in (and out) far too much heat to be sustainable. The windows at Green Orchard, from the British firm George Barnsdale, are sealed units (meaning no gaps between the panes of glass), double-glazed, and filled with argon gas for protection against both heat loss and gain.

Another pick for the bathroom—these hand-carved soapstone bowls and trays from India are appealingly earthy and organic.

Quazi Design uses discarded magazines as its base material. All products are handmade by local Swazi women using fiberglass molds, and can be dyed in various shades.

Austrian ceramist Matthias Kaiser experiments with a stunning range of experimental glazes for his pottery, while his sculptural influences range from traditional Japanese pottery to music: "I constantly think about shapes and surfaces, so any glimpse, thought or sound has the potential to germinate into an idea."

Maple performs in the basement playroom. The basement windows are coated with a polycarbonate greenhouse glaze.

Recalling the look of the classic Bauer Pottery design from the 1930s, the Beehive Coffee Mug from the Bauer Pottery Company of Los Angeles features a pronounced handle and a tall profile that is reminiscent—as the name aptly indicates—of a beehive.
