This open-concept Amsterdam loft features soaring 15-foot ceilings, an Eames lounge chair and ottoman, and a Jielde light. Throughout the home, Standard Studio architects Wouter Slot and Jurjen van Hulzen favored raw materials, including concrete, oiled oak, and hot-rolled steel, all of which complemented the original space's industrial feel. Tucked smartly underneath the loft, a compact home office features functional built-in shelving and an Eames DSR chair.

By creating a desk out of roof beams, this home office perfectly integrates into an open-plan renovation of a Northern Italian farmhouse.

In the living room, an Eames lounge chair is matched with a Richard Conover–designed fiberglass chair in similar proportions. A custom coffee table by Asher Israelow com-plements the industrial lighting by Workstead, affixed to walls painted in Farrow and Ball’s Manor House Gray. The sliding doors leading into the home office were fabricated by Markus Bartenschlager.

Architects Mayer Sattler-Smith designed the bookshelves and Alvar Aalto the 406 lounge chair for Artek.

An Eames lounge and ottoman hold court in the master bedroom upstairs. Plenty of natural light and a muted color scheme give the space a wonderfully light feel.

For Paul and Shoko Shozi, a pair of retiring Angelenos, the goal was to shut out the neighborhood but bring in the sunny skies. Their new prefab home, the Tatami House, designed by Swiss architect Roger Kurath of Design*21, makes a central courtyard the physical, and maybe even the spiritual, center of the home. Because the Japanese maple in the courtyard had to be planted before the ipe deck was laid, Kurath designed a small removable panel to allow access to the tree’s base. The Shozis can pull up the bit of decking to tend to the tree and replace it when they’re through. And because the boards line up perfectly, only the gardener need know it’s there. From the kitchen and living room you’re well connected to the courtyard and the rest of the house.

In the master bedroom, the couple opted for Artemide lighting: Vintage Eclisse table lamps by Vico Magistretti hang over the nightstands and a Tizio table lamp by Richard Sapper rests on a side table. The lounge chairs are vintage finds, and the rug is a Bedouin design purchased in Jerusalem.

Where as many designers and architects created highly handcrafted pieces of furniture, Martin Eisler and Carlo Hauner developed Brazilian design by venturing into mass-production with their company Forma. These lounge chairs were produced by Forma in Brazil during the 1950s and 1960s.

Like a fusion between his Low Pad design and the classic Eames model, this sleek lounge chair dressed up the upholstered foam backing for the board room.

The Larrea lounge combines a latigo leather sling seat with a powder-coated steel frame.

The dining room features 1970s leather-and-brass dining chairs and a table concocted from a brass-and-silver base and a custom lacquered top. The cheerful blue paint enlivening the doorway is from Emery & Cie.

“From the courtyard, you then enter the house proper, directly into the main living room,” Hutchison says. “From this room, you have a panoramic view looking out through the trees to the river, or back into the courtyard.” The wood-burning fireplace, from Majestic, is clad in steel panels. Eames Molded Plywood lounge chairs sit side-by-side in the living room.

In the living room, an array of furniture from Knoll, B&B Italia, and Room & Board make the surrounding views comfortable to observe. Wood used Kawneer for windows and Andersen for the doors.

Designed by Benjamin Cherner, the Cherner Lounge Arm Chair is defined by its welcoming, curved shape that recalls the original 1958 Cherner chair design by Benjamin’s father, Norman Cherner.

Based on the original sofa designed by Milo Baughman in 1959, the Darren Three-Seater Sofa and Lounge Chair are timeless furnishings that feature high seat backs and undeniably midcentury modern silhouettes. First designed in 1955 by Mogens Lassen for the Copenhagen Cabinetmaker’s Guild Competition, the Saxe Lounge Chair is a timeless chair that blends the convenience of a folding chair and the comfort of a lounge chair. The 1955 model of the chair was made by A.J. Iversen—a master joiner in midcentury Denmark. The Saxe has been reproduced to mark the 60th anniversary of its design, capturing the original appeal of the chair.

Nearly exact replicas of a sofa and lounge chair designed by Milo Baughman in 1959, the Darren Three-Seater Sofa and Darren Lounge Chair are timeless furnishings that feature a high seat back and an undeniably midcentury modern silhouette. Handcrafted in North Carolina and featuring walnut legs handmade in New York, the sofa and chair adopt the bench-made production method from Thayer Coggin that has been in place since 1953.

With its intricate Farmhouse Lounger, Bend sought to design a piece that was as sturdy as a piece of farm machinery, but equally easy to relax in after a long day. The backrest was inspired by old Amish barn architecture, which is then blended with modern geometric shapes. The chair can be used indoors and out, and is comfortable enough to use without a cushion.

The OGK Lounge Chair was designed in 1962 by Danish architect Ole Gjerløv-Knudsen. The chair is comprised of sustainably harvested beech, which is met with natural jute slip that makes up the seat and chair back.
