Arbel’s projects—both products and architectural commissions—follow a chronological numbering system. The house itself is his 23rd design, while the one-of-a-kind glass pendants that accent nearly every room like a starscape are called “28.”

Brammy and Kyprianou hung Koura pendant lights by New Zealand designer David Trubridge above the dining area. Their organic forms and diamond-shaped shadows create intimacy in the vast space. Among Bilardo’s contributions were the black tulipwood cabinetry and ceiling and the cantilevered concrete countertop that appears to go through the glass wall.

For the dining room, Freeman and Feldmann swapped their tiny table for developer John Walker's larger one since he was moving into a smaller space. They topped it with a $12 pendant lamp from Ikea and finished the "room" with a counsel from West Elm.

A built-in bench by the window is a cozy perch for Tyler. The herringbone flooring looks like wood but is actually man-made.

Nicolas Gervais designed the pendant lights above the kitchen island, which was designed by Plasse and built by woodworker Stéphane Bilodeau.

The Copper Table Lamp

The Pantop Table Lamp from Verpan is a bold light source that provides warm, direct lighting, and is best utilized in a living room, office, or bedroom. Defined by its distinctive bell shape, the Pantop provides a refreshing take on the limits of traditional table lamps. The widely flared shade helps create a playful personality within the lamp, and the luxurious copper adds elegant shine. The shade is held onto a copper stem, which is supported by a copper semisphere. Originally designed in 1980 by Verner Panton, the Pantop Table Lamp is both artful and sculptural, and will complement a variety of interior spaces. Verpan included Verner Panton’s signature on the base of the lamp, paying homage to the celebrated designer.

Timber battens were used on north-facing windows to prevent excessive heat in the summer. The exterior is clad in Scyon’s Linea weatherboard and covered in Dylux’s Western Myall paint. Beneath the upper floor, a little nook makes for the perfect covered carport and storage spot for surfboards.

The family dog enjoys the shade provided by the corrugated-copper roof overhangs.

Signal Pendant Light, $495–$695 at the Dwell Store Inspired by satellites and stars, the Signal Pendant Light from Brooklyn–based Souda is meant to resemble a celestial body. It features a perforated metal shade that provides a distinctive light diffusion.

"The kitchen refers to London’s feeling the most," says Stepanova. Pendant lamps from Normann Copenhagen illuminate the kitchen, all of which was fabricated by the woodworking studio Dyzyk according to Stepanova's designs.

In the Denmark home of designer Eglantine Charrier, original 1920s windows and moldings meet modern accessories like a black Caravaggio pendant lamp by Cecilie Manz for Lightyears.

As Østergaard says, “With a small house, you really consider everything you own. You don’t have 20 pots and pans, you have only four good ones.”

Happy Accent Now that the interior’s palette is firmly in place, Winterhalder has slowly been adding splashes of color. E27 pendant lamps from Muuto in the kitchen and guest room have red cords; one wall in the guest room is also red, with matching red locker storage. The inside of the front door is painted bright green. “For me, they’re kids’ colors,” she says. “I just love them.” muuto.com

The GM—Grethe Meyer—Pendants are balanced pendant lights that can be used for overhead lighting in a dining room or kitchen, and can also be grouped together to create a graphic lighting installation. The Frame Pendant Light from Iacoli & McAllister is a simple light that celebrates the source of illumination—a simple white light bulb. The bulb is encased in a steel frame that has been plated in copper, creating a shiny finish on the geometric pendant light. It can be used on its own, or grouped with other Frame Pendants (as pictured) to create a graphic display.

Norm 12 comes in two finishes, pure white and simple matt white, the extra large light is intended for hallways or larger rooms, while the small light is meant to be hung over a table or in a nook.

Utilizing lightweight LED technology, Arik Levy's Wireflow pendant lamps are an airy, geometric take on lighting design.

The Signal Pendant Light is at once simple and sculptural. Comprised of a spun aluminum shade that is met with a polished central stem, the Signal Pendant Light hovers above a dining room table, kitchen counter, or living room interior. The light uses warm LEDs and indirect light to create a welcoming diffusion of light that remains unobtrusive in a space.

"I always have ideas floating around, inspired by a number of deferent things: previous generations, art, technology, color," says Dowie. "I think a lot and process these ideas through thought—it is the ideas that keep coming back that we end up developing." In the case of the Line collection, the balance and lightness of Alexander Calder's mobiles was pared with practicality. "It's perhaps a more romantic approach, but I do hope to strike a balance between form and function."

Shown with the simple Drop cap Pendant, the Plumen 001 is the original energy-saving bulb from Plumen. The bulb’s dynamic design mimics the filament found in incandescent bulbs, but its glass, sculptural silhouette makes the bulb look more elegant than traditional bulbs and standard CFLs. The Plumen 001 has a screw fitting that fits into any lamp that accommodates a standard screw bulb.

The courtyard is sunken because of the existing grade. The Albezia shade tree was planted when the outdoor area was still scrap yard, an “act of hope and faith in the future,” says Wittman.

The Workstead Floor Lamp is a handsome take on a timeless silhouette. Its linen shade can be adjusted between 52–72" above the floor and rests on an adjustable swivel joint.

In the bathroom beneath the stairs, copper fixtures and subway tile feel at once sensitive to the home's roots and very of the moment. It is this attention to cohesiveness that the Don't Move Improve! award seeks to recognize.

Neyer is also working on prototype for a pendant lamp inspired by a yo-yo.

The Doo Wop Suspension Light, originally called the Navy Light, was first designed in the 1950s in collaboration with the Navy Buildings Department. The pendant was prevalent during this time period because of its practical functionality and distinctive look. Although this pendant light is a modern take on the classic, the Doo Wop Pendant uses the same production methods as the 1950s, including hand-spun shades that are completed with a fine rolled edge.

Yield Design Co.’s Meso Copper Pendant is a statement-making lighting source that is both minimalist and sculptural. The pendant is hand spun from 20 gauge pure copper that is finished with a clear protective finish that maintains the natural luster of the copper.
