COMBACK CHAIR

Kartell has once again revisited a great classic and given a new look to the Windsor chair. A return to the glorious Anglo-Saxon past of England in the XVIIIth century for a “Comb Back” version with a matte frame featuring a backrest consisting of seven “teeth” which spread out towards the lumbar region where they meet a reinforced hexagonal rim with slim shafts radiating down to join the seat. A goodly size, this single mold chair embodies functionality and ergonomics well-freighted with sentiment and memories.

A cantilevered slab of Colorado wood, secured in the gap beneath a concrete block, serves as a dining table. Pasternak paired this with a vintage chair made of rare Caoba wood. To fill other gaps between blocks, the architects alternated strips of wood with strips of Plexiglas that let in light from the adjacent kitchen.

Throughout the house, Curtiss mixed natural materials with industrial ones. Downstairs, fir and cedar wood on the doors and open-joisted ceiling balance the colder, industrial feel of the concrete floor and steel staircase railing. In the dining room, a pendant lamp from RLM Lighting hangs above a table that combines Cherner table legs with a new white laminate top. The yellow chairs are by Tolix.

Though the house is only 925 square feet, Moffitt argues that it feels much larger, for which she credits three factors: its visual connections to the outdoors, its open spaces, and its simple interior-design language.

The flooring throughout the interior is maple. A vintage Ercol sofa and arm chair, Eclipse coffee table by Stua, Wide Wale rug by Bev Hisey Textile Design, and Moon floor lamp by Estiluz Spain furnish the living room. "Extensive planning went into ‘aging in place’ forecasting a host of different scenarios about what that meant physically and psychologically," architect Alex Tedesco says. "We did ‘day in the life’ modeling to understand all the various barrier free requirements that might arise."

"We had picnics there. We sat looking east. We sat looking west. We sat looking south. The site felt wonderful."
