Dekton Chromica. Less than a decade ago, Spanish company Cosentino developed an innovative, non-porous, ultra-compact material called Dekton. In addition to countertops, backsplashes, and floors, Dekton can be implemented outside, even as exterior cladding, thanks to its high resistance to UV rays, stains, and thermal shock. The most recent Dekton line, Chromica, is a super-matte, deeply saturated collection of two colors: Baltic, a dark shade of blue and Feroe, a dark shade of green. Don't fret — more hues are in development.

Though colorful dashes here and there certainly enliven the sober interior, little adds a dose of whimsy like the wall decals found in the kids‘ rooms. The owl over Jonne‘s shoulder is available from Raumgerecht and the branch leaves are from the Dutch company Inke.

Bringing a little bit of handicraft to the show floor gave visitors a chance to see what goes into making a chair—and perhaps a little shock from the sound of a pneumatic stapler.

Risks were taken in this room, and the shock factor from the green walls, colorful posters, and red velvet curtains work wonders to inspire as you enter this space.

“Seeing the Irish Green wall in the beginning was very shocking,” admits architect Dan Brunn. “That shock is a positive thing—it completely changes the way the room invites you into the space. Before, it was a white canvas, now the green wall pulls your eye to the living green wall.”

Babies sleep in carriages outside in the cold while mothers drink tea in the warmth. This shocked me almost as much of the rainbows of color all over Reykjavik!

A MODERN HOME IN A SOUTH CAROLINA MARSH

In our July/August issue we profile a stunning modern home designed by architect James Choate of the Atlanta firm Surber Barber Choate & Hertlein. Located in a 5,000-acre nature preserve in South Carolina, the house is a rare instance of bold contemporary architecture in the region; as Choate puts it, "to put a contemporary house in the Lowcountry is a real shocker." We shared a single image in our Houses We Love column; to see more of the glass-walled great room, inside and out, click through our slideshow.

Growler Bike

Grand Rapids designer Joey Ruiter made the 29th Street Bike to withstand whatever the road can give out, with room for fat, shock-absorbent tires built into the durable, industrial frame. Then he basically rode away from the competition by adding a growler holder. Nobody can guarantee a smooth (i.e. non-foamy) ride, but at least you’ll have something refreshing for when its over.

About 200 guests climbed up into the cylinder, following a narrative that began with Shulman's best-known photos, which are all in color, in a ring on the bottom floor. Borja Clemente, a young architecture student with a large SLR camera around his neck, said, like many of his Spanish cohorts, he came there because he had recognized the image on the postcard, but he was shocked once he arrived. "Everyone knows this work, that is why people came here tonight," he said. "But I never thought that one man did all of it!"

"From the beginning, when wife of Corning Glass Works Physicist Jesse T. Littleton baked a sponge cake in the bottom of a battery jar made of NONEX, women have been involved in nearly every aspect of Pyrex development. NONEX was a new thermal shock resistant glass developed by Corning for railroad lanterns and other industrial products, and Littleton and others were looking for new products to develop with this unique glass. Bessie Littleton offered to test it out in her kitchen and made the famous sponge cake that launched the brand."

I think the most important thing architect Hamish Lyon told me about the new Melbourne Convention Center was that he wanted it to become a part of the city's architectural scheme, embraced by locals as another landmark to which they'll become attached, and understood by visitors as more than just a place where large groups of dentists get together. "The overriding thing for us," he told me, "is that we want people to feel the very clear shock that this is not a typical convention center. I want them to feel that it's more like a concert hall or a museum. And we want them to feel that it's a part of Melbourne."Image courtesy
