This midcentury gem lays in Crestwood Hills, in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, an endangered enclave of midcentury post-and-beam houses designed by A. Quincy Jones and Whitney R. Smith. Elise Loehnen and Rob Fissmer bought their house, which dates to 1950, in 2012, furnishing the living room with a Jasper sofa by Room & Board, Laccio tables by Marcel Breuer, and a wool sisal rug from Madison Flooring and Design.

Sisal Ramps

Named after its charred larch cladding, this tea room, designed by Czech studio A1 Architects, sits next to a lake in a woodland area near the city of Česká Lípa in the Czech Republic. Its sliding doors can be opened for enhanced connectivity with the surrounding nature, or closed to create a more secluded oasis. At the center of the space is a hearth with a teapot suspended from the sisal rope domed ceiling above it.

This 17th centry barn in the historic core of Bregaglia in Grigioni was renovated with Sisal – a natural fiber flooring of coconut and marsh grass, in the bedrooms.

The white sectional is by ABC Carpet & Home. It’s surrounded by a custom Sisal rug, a concrete coffee table by CB2, and a vintage wooden bench sourced from Found Object.

The Cat Chalet by Space Int'l has a plush interior furnished with recycled carpet remnants. The vertical supports are wrapped in sisal rope.

The seating area features custom sofas covered in synthetic ultrasuede, in what Dowling calls “a forgiving color.” The felt ottoman, by Cini Boeri for Knoll, doubles as a table thanks to a lacquered tray from Williams-Sonoma Home. The sisal rug is from West Elm.

In the primary bedroom, SchoolHouse Electric Reading Lamps, custom Sisal rugs, and tousled linen bedding create warmth and neutral texture.

After the success of London Design Festival, it’s now time for London Craft Week (September 30-October 10), a celebration of makers, designers, brands, and galleries chock-full of demonstrations, exhibitions, and workshops. "The Natural Room" at Sarah Myerscough Gallery, for example, illuminates pieces that honor organic materials like wood, jute, sisal, and willow. The work of emerging makers is intertwined with those by established artists and craftspeople in "300 Objects," curated by heavyweights including Martin Brudnizki and Yinka Ilori, and handmade Mexican objects get the spotlight in "Revolution of Forms."
