VP1 FLOWERPOT LAMP Created by 20th-century Danish designer Verner Panton, the Flowerpot VP1 lamp is a stellar example of mid-century design. Designed in 1969, the ceiling-mount Flowerpot lamp takes its inspiration from the sunny '60s and is comprised of a pair of nesting spheres. A smaller sphere discreetly hides the bulb and is protected by the larger dome, both made from vibrant lacquered steel with a color-matched fabric cord.

The Vinyl Lover Why not commit to a turntable built to last a lifetime? The Scout Jr. by VPI is a newly introduced, simplifed version of the popular Scout turntable that has been made for over a decade. The Scout Jr. is a belt-drive turntable with a fully isolated AC synchronous motor, a nine-inch stainless-steel tonearm, and a premounted Ortofon 2M Red cartridge. A separate phono preamp is needed. Scout Jr. isn’t cheap, but it represents excellent value: Many products from VPI’s initial production runs are still in daily use. $1,499.

Like many of Benepe's projects, planting P.S. 111's playground is more than a quality of life improvement. The grass and other flora help absorb flood water during storms, relieving pressure on the city's drainage systems.

For PS 234 in Manhattan's Tribeca neighborhood, Macrae-Gibson designed a colorful walkway to connect the main school building to a modern addition designed by the firm in 2008. The walkway, adjacent to a play yard, protects students and teachers from the elements as they move from one area to another.

PS 313 is a school in Sunnyside, Queens for 432 kindergarteners through fifth graders that opened in the fall of 2014. Equipped with a central courtyard and rooftop play area, the brick masonry building has attained a green rating from New York City.

The girls rinse off in the partially enclosed shower outside the master bathroom. “The kids really love the ups and downs and ins and outs of the house,” says Daniela.

The panelized, prefabricated wall system allowed the home to be assembled quickly without delays—in the words of the homeowners, there were “no hiccups, no hold ups, no hassles.”

The door to the right leads to the garden kitchen where the cooking school sessions are held. It’s housed in a central volume and surrounded by greenery and relaxed dining set-ups.

French designer Matali Crasset's wardrobe for Ikea PS 2014 ($179) is an open piece that comes with dozens of colorful tabs that can be arranged and rearranged on the metal mesh front. Crasset describes it as "free from codes—due to its camouflage it adapts to any kind of home." The top-heavy towers were meant to invert structural conventions, as well as material ones. "The structure inverts the logic of load-bearing brick construction and creates a gravity-defying effect," Benjamin says.

For their MOMA PS1 Young Architect's Prize-winning design, titled Afterparty, MOS designed these thatch-covered thermal chimneys. The tower-like structures draw warm air upwards, cooling the spaces below to keep visitors comfortable. To further cool the pavilion, mist was sprayed on the thatch: the water droplets would absorb the surrounding heat and evaporate, taking the heat with them.

“Our inspiration has been to create a beautiful space that children (and adults) can claim as their own, but also a structure that assumes an elegant and striking sculptural form, for the grown ups,” explains Koto.

The built-in shelving and storage unit was redesigned. "The idea was to make it a very multifunctional space," says Wittman of the dining nook, where kids can do homework or watch a movie, and grown-ups can gather for dinner around the large table.

“It’s like Lego for grown-ups,” Fissmer says of Rams’s 606 Universal Shelving System for Vitsœ, which makes another appearance in the office. “It’s a responsible way to handle storage.”
