Manitoba Hydro Place (Winnipeg, Manitoba: 2009)

How refreshing is it to see a power company be so respectful of power? Manitoba Hydro didn’t merely create a new headquarters when it unveiled this towering 23-story building, it created a case study in intelligent high-rise construction. A center chimney between three six-story atria cools, warms, and recycles air before its distributed to the rest of the structure, part of an almost organic system that utilizes geothermal systems to provide energy for 100% of the cooling and 75% of the heating. Along with a system of radiant slabs embedded in the concrete and automated lighting systems, the LEED Platinum-certified design by KPMB Architects showcases the power of passive energy.

This outdoor chair from designer Damian Velasquez is both striking and strikingly comfortable—you might not believe you're sitting on metal. The mesh design is sturdy, but has just enough give to conform to your body. The heat-dispersing, wind-resistant powder-coated stainless steel construction makes it a smart addition to your yard.

Built for a Brand

Facu Fernandez and his colleagues Nati Lucero and Maxi Ciovich built Refugio for Camping, a space that reflected its focus on local beer and wine and the outdoor lifestyle. With its small footprint, garden of plants, and transparent exterior, the Refugio project captured that sense of openness, versatility, and abandon. It Met added a dozen custom tables to complete the casual outdoor space.

A Green Lantern on the Rooftop

“We wanted to create a place that could embrace the frantic dynamics of a bar in a natural environment, but without loosing touch with the technical details,” says architect Facu Fernandez. “In the end, it's just a metal structure with big wooden boxes and plants growing all around it, a big green lantern on the roof of a building.”

Building a Better BarA series of five big metal rings linked by a four longitudinal beams forms the skeleton of the structure, built in studio and assembles on site. Clad in transparent sinusoidal polycarbonate sheets and filled with furniture crafted by the trio from guatambu hardwood panels, it can be easily disassembled, transported and then assembled again.

With the help of architects X+L Studio, Nynke Meeuwissen and Mark Aink rehabilitated an old school outside of Amsterdam into a comfortable roost for their family of five. The former gym—with original herringbone parquet floors—is now the living room, furnished with Minotti sofas, a Danskina rug, and a Gyrofocus wood-burning stove.
