The ballot, which also named a senior SpaceX representative as its mayor with 100 percent of the early vote, was never really in doubt.

A communal washbasin sits outside a pair of bathrooms on the main level. The deep green, seen throughout the loft, started with a joint decision about the kitchen cabinets. “I selected three colors from the laminate catalog, and my kids and my girlfriend, Carmen, voted,” says Gabriele. “They chose petrol bluish green.”

The AIA/LA Restaurant Design Awards (RDAs) honor excellence in the design of restaurants, cafes, bars, lounges, and nightclubs. These popular awards attract an array of industry-leading architects, interior designers, celebrity chefs, and restaurant owners, as well as design media from all over the world. The awards recognize both Jury winners and People’s Choice winners, which are voted on by the general public at aialosangeles.org in three categories: restaurants, cafés/bars, and lounges/nightclubs. The event will be sponsored by Astek, and the winners will be announced on Stage A at 5:00 p.m.
Small spaces can translate to big problems when it comes to storage; that’s why we love the Method Bookends entry. Slicing the bottles in half, contest winner Rebecca attached recycled pieces of plexiglass to the open sides of the bottles for support. Plexiglass was a genius idea not only because it’s see-through (a perfect match for the clear bottle), but also because it’s sturdy and supportive. Space saved, and materials recycled!

Shot on location at Cape Town’s Truth Coffee café, its steampunk aesthetic was designed by Haldane Martin. It’s the first year that a film has been nominated (feature-length Four Corners was also in the running), which seems fitting, given that this was also the inaugural year of the Design Indaba Film Festival. The dozen nominees for Most Beautiful Object in South Africa spanned a wide number of genres, including media and tech, as well as the more expected furniture, dresses, and jewelry.
With the U.S. presidential election around the bend, the Harvard University Graduate School of Design is investigating the relationship between architecture and politics via Zoom. First up, (September 28) Danielle Allen, the James Bryant Conant University Professor at Harvard University and director of Harvard’s Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics, joins Michael Murphy, founding principal and executive director of Boston-based MASS Design Group for a discussion about the 2020 American Academy of Arts & Sciences report, "Our Common Purpose." Hosted by the school’s dean, Sarah Whiting, it will probe the idea of voting as both a civic and design issue and sets the scene for next month’s fitting topic, "The Architecture of Democracy" (October 28) in partnership with MIT.
