Portland-based pastry chef Andrea Nicholas purchased a 1953 midcentury ranch whose 2,500 square feet needed "a lot of TLC." Nicholas hired architect Risa Boyer to design the renovation, which involved opening up the kitchen to the dining room and creating a contemporary open-plan living space.

Architect Hank Louis worked with Navajo tribe elders to secure a 66-year lease on a half-acre lot in the middle of Bluf, Utah, for Rosie Joe and her children.

The couple wanted their house to set a high standard in the London borough of Newham—an area that has long struggled with quality of housing. "We purchased the property due to the fact that it was originally a poorly looked after HMO (House of Multiple Occupancy) and needed a lot of TLC," explains Richard. "The house had so much going for it—you just had to look hard!"

The home’s dated brown exterior and overgrown plantings were in need of some TLC.

Before: The living room, dark and frozen in time, was in clear need of TLC, but not without potential. The soaring wood-paneled ceilings – 13 feet at the top of the pitch – and original stone fireplace were ready to shine again with a little bit of elbow grease.

Although they look round, Mongolian gers are most often actually four- or five-sided, the former constructed using 66 roof poles and the latter 81 poles. Sloping roofs make gers more aerodynamic, meaning winds are unlikely to tear off the roof beams. The partial roof covering of Nergui and Tsegmed’s ger is painted with traditional Buddhist guardian animal motifs, including lions, a tiger, and the mythical Garuda. A clip-on solar-powered LED lamp is a comfort added in recent years.

A huge part component of our project is forestry and site development. The site as we purchased it was fairly neglected and needed a lot of TLC. Working closely with the county and foresters we started to realize the potential for not only the view but the entire site. This is a bit of a sneak peak into how the site opened over time. It's a slow and painstaking process but well worth it.

The bungalow's L-shaped plans allows for more exposures and sunlight. A stand-up desk in Dave's office was custom-tailored to his 6'6" height.

TLC Modular Homes is a family-owned-and-operated company located in Goldendale. Daníel Atlason teamed up with 66°North to launch a collection of 11 kites made of colorful technical fabrics salvaged from the clothing company’s factories. To ensure that each kite would be airworthy, Atlason collaborated with the Scottish kitemaker Karl Longbottom.
