"This was the first time we had the opportunity to design a kitchen," says Hollie. "A few elements were important to us: space to prep food together, and space to move freely but smartly." As a chef and food educator, Hollie uses the airy and open kitchen as a laboratory for healthy meals to inspire her job teaching.

Flóki stool by Dóra Hansen-Hansen is known as a successful interior architect, educator, event curator, and to the crowds at DesignMarch: a product designer who reinvents the possibilities of everyday materials. Her work with ocean harvested driftwood for the Tindur lamp is well known, but it was the Flóki (or Felt) stool that caught my attention at the event. Photo by: Tiffany Orvet

The property features many such traditional craft elements native to Nicaragua; rancho builders from the La Paz Centro region of Nicaragua, architects and engineers from Granada, and craftspeople from all over the country helped build the property, creating everything from light fixtures to stone sinks. Andrew and Kristin enlisted landscape expertise from Chris Shanks, a permaculture educator based in Ometepe, who helped educate the duo on practical plants to grow for teas and edible consumption. Accessory designs like white bed linens with colorful throws are a work of Daina Platais of local shop Amano.

Already legends in the field of architecture and design (classic Eames shell chairs are pictured above), in 1977 Charles and Ray Eames set out to adapt a book by a Dutch educator into a short documentary, Powers of Ten. The film shows the human environment slowly receding as the camera zooms out over a park in Chicago into outerspace. In a matter of seconds, the Eamseses put the city in a radically new perspective, and began a new conversation about scale. After a screening of Powers of Ten, at Stage A at 2:30 p.m., Llisa Demetrios, Charles and Ray’s granddaughter, will discuss the short film’s legacy.

Student's Pavilion Plan

Silva began researching, gradually building a community around those with experience and knowledge of the Pavilion. He spoke to a couple in Cleveland that managed a roller rink that once was located on-site, the members of the New York State Pavilion Paint Project, working to restore the structure, and found out about the 1969 concert series, when bands such as The Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac and Santana played under the Tent of Tomorrow. He even made the Pavilion part of his teaching curriculum—the middle school educator has his eighth graders design alternative uses for the pavilion in 2012.

Edgeless Schools takes into consideration how best to educate digital natives. “All these kids are growing up knowing they can access at a very young age the information of the world on a hand held device,” Mellin says. “What does that mean in terms of formal education? One thing that is agreed upon is that while no one knows how this will be played out, there is a great emphasis on flexibility, and being able to use spaces in a variety of ways.” Photo courtesy the Center for Architecture.
