In the salad days before the ’68 riots, 1116 had housed a bakery, but since then it has played home to a hair salon, a crack house, and, for a time, just the rats and pigeons.

They seek to vary the contexts of intervention and the nature of commands. This renovation is a 68 sqm apartment situated on the eleventh district in Paris. The space maintains the original moldings of the building, and features a series of herringbone patterned flooring.

Limited edition stone candle holders by Fort Standard, $68 each at fortstandard.squarespace.com Fort Standard, a duo of two Pratt graduates working out of Red Hook in Brooklyn, has made quick work of the American design scene since forming their studio in 2011. The work doesn't come cheap, but these small-scale, limited edition textured marble candle holders are a way to get the look without breaking the bank. Cut from scrap stone in New Jersey and lined on the bottom with a leather pad to avoid scratches.

Grzegorz Kowalski’s sculpture “Reloj Solar," Mexico City. ’68 Olympics Organizers commissioned a series of 22 public artworks from around the world for the Ruta de la Amistad (Road of Friendship). The statues lined ten miles of road in a barren area south of the city, near the newly constructed Olympic village. Mexico City has tripled in size since 1968 and these statues are now in the one of the most densely populated areas of the city. The tiny road has become a major multi-level highway, the Periferico Sur. An effort is underway to restore the statues and relocate them to dedicated sculpture parks nearby. Photo by Gary Hustwit.
