Open shelving between the living room and dining area maximizes light and air flow and showcases eclectic objects, which include old printing blocks found at a garage sale and bowls homeowner Kathryn Tyler’s mother bought in South Africa. For Tyler, storage is critical. "It's something that always gets overlooked but it's actually the most important thing. I calculated the linear footage of the books I own to make sure everything would fit."

Architect Deam created the dining table from a fallen elm tree.

“We wanted to bring the outside in with the warmth of the materials,” Flato says. “A custom dining table and shelving were designed and built from a pecan tree that had fallen on the site.” Vertical grain Western red cedar, the same material used for the exterior siding, was also used to create custom kitchen cabinets.

Located in Karuizawa, a popular summer resort town in Japan’s Nagano Prefecture, Four Leaves is a weekend getaway designed to accommodate the homeowner and their guests in a lush, sylvan setting. Designed by Kentaro Ishida Architects Studio (KIAS), the highlight of the stunning, 2,400-square-foot house is its sloping, angular roof sections that are delicately assembled to resemble fallen leaves.

The simple yet functional kitchen uses countertops from IKEA and shelving made from fallen trees on the property.

Now, the kitchen takes precedence in the new scheme. The six-meter-long island "has a strong energy," says Martin. "It was inspired by Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey monolith depicted in the first and final scenes. A fallen monolith with centripetal force. The piece helped us to reorganize and restructure the ground floor once we cleared the walls and divisions."

When a couple bought a late-19th-century Victorian for their family of five, they knew right away that a renovation was in order.
