This classic owned by writer Susan Orlean and her husband John Gillespie was updated by architect Jeff Fink, who specializes in restoring homes by Austrian-born architect Rudolph W. Schindler. The couple has previously owned his Los Angeles Roth house, buying it even though they lived in New York. Then, they sold it for the Kallis-Sharlin House, known for its butterfly roof—which allowed Schindler to add clerestory windows, and more light to the home. For the exterior, they ordered a custom hue from Behr, channeling the grey-green of a Martini olive.

Robertson--with the help of developers Katie Nichols and John Walker, who were heavily involved in the design process--finished the guest bathroom with Modwalls tiles and a sink they found on eBay. They used a piece of marine plywood, leftover from building the front-porch steps, to create a counter on which the sink could sit--and where the family can rest their toothbrushes. To the right of the sink is a Toto dual-flush toilet, which is great for conserving water but has proven problematic for toilet training, as American potty seats aren't designed to fit these Japanese basins.

A vintage mahogany cabinet by Borge Morgensen, covered with a floral wallpaper by Josef Frank, adds a dose of cheerful color to the adjacent dining area.

A mix of vintage ceramics and artworks soften the minimal, top-of-the-line appliances. Serra sourced the ovens from Gaggenau, and the Dekton Borea countertops from Cosentino. The Kohler sink is paired with a touchless faucet, which is easier on the hands for the whole family.

Agate drawer pulls and a backplash of Cosentino's Silestone Albedo pair with a Gaggenau full-surface induction cooktop. The walls throughout were painted in White Tie from Farrow & Ball.

Serra installed new Dinesen oak flooring throughout, finished in matte white oil, in the Scandinavian tradition. She also replaced two curved-top windows with one large, rectangular picture frame window to emphasize the light and coastal scenery. The vintage handwoven Swedish rugs add warmth to the overal palette of cool blue and pale neutral tones.

Kitchen designer Susan Serra embarked on a deeply personal project when she set to update her own home kitchen, a multigenerational gathering spot for a family that loves to cook. Combining elements from her Danish background and coastal setting on Long Island, the resulting combination of colors and style influences were initially inspired, she says, by a Swedish painting that she and her husband purchased to commemorate their 40th anniversary, which sits above the light gray cabinetry from Cabico (top right).
