British artist Hannah Sawtell and technologist Avi Flombaum created sawbaum.com, where users can create visual collages using multiple vine streams. "We wanted it to look like a visual comic book, with overlapping panels," said Flombaum. "And we wanted it to be fun!" Photo courtesy Rhizome.

What is the average run size of the products you sell?

Most of our makers are individuals, with the largest having four to six employees. We focus on helping emerging businesses to grow, ultimately providing the support services they need—social marketing, branding, photography, accounting, legal—so they can focus on design and production. Probably a fourth of the products we carry are one-of-a-kind pieces that can’t be found anywhere else. Pepple Salt & Pepper Shakers, $58.

The fundamentals of Emmanuel de Bayser’s Berlin apartment toe the line of cool, muted modern design. Yet there’s a trick at play: by adding distinct shots of color, de Bayser gives every room its own richly hued rainbow and, in doing so, creates a personal paean to the more playful side of midcentury design.

In Washington’s Methow Valley, a modern cabin with an outdoor living room allows views of the surrounding woodland and meadow to perforate its volume.
By day, the Chechaquo Lot 6 cabin gives the impression of floating in a forest clearing; by night, its windows glow against the wooded darkness. From all vantage points, the landscape permeates this 1,000-square-foot cabin, designed for two outdoor enthusiasts and tucked at the toe of a dramatic slope in Winthrop, Washington.

"Previously, the closet was not a walk-in and was stuffed head to toe with clothes," says Wise. "We carved out space from the hallway and created a walk-in that was outfitted from top-to-bottom with functional storage." A pocket door hides the interior when needed. The shower is in the same space as before, but lengthened so that Wise could use the awkward angled wall for a shower bench.

Perforated steel panels provide a contrasting sense of roughness and lightness, which Oman played with throughout the home's design. The skin adds transparency and graphic energy to the exterior, though Oman did worry about people fixating on the tic-tac-toe element. "It's like calling a rectangular building the Tetris house," he says.

Robertson--with the help of developers Katie Nichols and John Walker, who were heavily involved in the design process--finished the guest bathroom with Modwalls tiles and a sink they found on eBay. They used a piece of marine plywood, leftover from building the front-porch steps, to create a counter on which the sink could sit--and where the family can rest their toothbrushes. To the right of the sink is a Toto dual-flush toilet, which is great for conserving water but has proven problematic for toilet training, as American potty seats aren't designed to fit these Japanese basins.

At 20' feet long, the cabin can fit three twin mattresses toe-to-toe on the upper level, and two on the smaller lower level to comfortably sleep five adults. Integrating ladder groves in the wall eschews the need for a movable ladder that would have cluttered up the interior space.

The leftmost cabinet above the Duravit bathtub (equipped with KWC fixtures) occupies the space where a doorway once lead into the living room, creating unnecessary traffic from the home’s public spaces through to the master bedroom. The new bathroom features a minimal palette of white and teak. “It’s able to hold up on boat decks so is good for a bathroom,” Klug says. It also makes the heated floor that much nicer to walk on in the morning.
