The Cobb Haus, a wood-sided, 700-square-foot cabin in Cobb, California, features a large wood deck surrounded by towering trees.

Visitors to Muuto's headquarters are greeted by high-impact graphic wall art and wraparound glass walls. Brandt describes the look as "Scandinavian with a New Yorker twist."

From urban-dwellers to empty-nesters, many are now embracing the movement toward smaller, more sensible living. Bosch's new line of 24" kitchen appliances is designed to help them save space without downsizing on style.

Muuto's full collection is on display in their spacious showroom, where individual environments are dedicated to different rooms of the home. The showroom also functions as a meeting place. "Because the number of employees at Muuto is growing, we sometimes have a lack of meeting rooms," explains project manager Nina Bruun. Impromptu gatherings give visitors an opportunity to see Muuto's collection come alive through organic interactions.

The interior design team avoided the temptation to use too many bright colors. The canteen, for example, features three different versions of the NERD chair in Muuto green, even though it is available in eight different colors.

Brandt explains the decision to allow guests to glimpse Muuto's inner workings: "You can see that we are concentrated and producing. It reassures you that we deliver good solutions and come up with a great combination of products."

Instead of design, Roman and Williams strove for simplicity and transparency. Rows of exposed light bulbs line the ceiling.

Threadless Warehouse & Headquarters As befitting the design-focused company, which elevated T-shirt art by building an online community that seemed to print cotton tees and cash in equal measure, Threadless calls this colorful warehouse home, which features art from locals such as Don’t Fret.

Snøhetta's design for the Groupe Le Monde headquarters building in Paris calls for a facade of pixelated glass "with varying degrees of transparency, translucency, and opacity." It is designed to appear somewhat homogeneous from a distance, but more dynamic and complex up close.

The building is expected to be an anchor of Paris Rive Gauche, a new neighborhood that is being redeveloped on the left bank of the Seine River near the Gare d’Austerlitz, in the city’s 13th arrondissement.

The vaulted ceilings on the underside of the "bridge" connecting the building's two volumes will be embedded with clusters of LED lights that can either provide simple illumination or be programmed to represent the flow of information in the digital age.

Edith Green-Wendell Wyatt Federal Building (Portland, Oregon: 2013) This massive modernization project goes green on many levels, from the initial decision to renovate instead of rebuild at another site, to the iconic addition of aluminum reeds on the west facade, which will both reduce heat gain from sunlight and serve as a three-story trellis for plants.

Bosch's compact kitchen line, which includes an electric and gas cooktop, wall oven, and refrigerator, as well as an 18" dishwasher, is particularly well-suited for city apartments and secondary hangouts, like basements and guesthouses.

The subdued color scheme is also evident in the conference room. Floor-to-glass glass walls underscore the company's commitment to transparency, even in the most private spaces. The room is illuminated by grey Studio pendant lamps by Thomas Bernstrand.

Tokyo, Japan-A city near and dear to the heart of popular culture, Tokyo endured two devastating catastrophes in the 20th century that destroyed half the city. Consequently, much of the architecture in the greater Tokyo area is stylistically modern. Notable buildings include Fuji TV headquarters on O’Daiba, the Imperial Palace, and the chipper red and white Tokyo Tower. Fans of Kenzo Tange already know of the Yoyogi National Gymnasium with its suspension roof design and curvilinear lines reminiscent of Le Corbusier’s Ronchamp. The China Central Television Headquarters by OMA is a bold take on the skyscraper that combines vertical and horizontal elements.

UNESCO Headquarters (Paris, 1951) Le Corbusier was initially recommended to design this structure, but budget issues from his previous UN project in New York led to the appointment of Breuer, Bernard Zehrfuss of France, and Pier Luigi Nervi of Italy. Together, Bosch's sleek 24" kitchen and laundry suites address the trend toward smaller living by extending modern, European-style design to even the closest quarters.

Joining the kitchen line, Bosch recently unveiled an efficient 24" laundry pair. The units can be stacked vertically, further reducing their footprint in the home.

Placing the products in an active environment reveals their potential applications. Stacked shelving systems partition workstations as well as contain books and other household items.

For Facebook's Menlo Park, California headquarters' mess hall, the pair describes their ethos as "a combination of their parents’ ’60s rebellion and their grandparents’ Depression-era rigor and hard work." Both expressing an interest in "anti-design," the designers focused on stripping things down to their essence. As Stephen describes, “With the Facebook guys we shared an interest in all things analog—the reliability of it, the common sense of it, the simplicity of it.” To recreate a camp-like atmosphere, the ceiling was deconstructed, framing exposed, and slick black tables and bar level booths filled the space, along with exposed lightbulbs and exposed rivets.

An architectural centerpiece of Lima, this banner-shaped edifice presents a striking symbol of progress at the intersection of two highways. At night, the neon lighting illuminates the titanium mesh exterior.

How do you view diversity at The Switzer Group? I look at, not just as gender or race, but as: let's open the doors up. Let's open 'em up and allow people to perform. Any advice for those, especially those in an ethnic minority, looking to enter design? You don't just break into it. You have to have some talent for it. It's hard to just walk in and say, "This is what I'm gonna do." You have to have some knowledge of what you're getting into: basic [design] knowledge, ACE Mentor-taught knowledge. Kids progress...then when they graduate from high school, they [go] on to college for architecture or engineering. You've got to keep the goal posts moving.
