It's a bit symbolic that an architectural and design partnership in Chicago would commission a new office inside the Jewelers Building, a landmark and the last of the early Adler & Sullivan structures left standing in the city's Loop business district. Exuding optimism and ease, the new, brightly colored space is arranged around a reclaimed timber treehouse.

Incorporating outdoor areas, such as the ground floor terrace, and playing with alternating room heights (the living room is nearly three times higher than the bedrooms) provided character and definition in what otherwise could have been a series of boxy spaces resembling Tetris pieces.

Workshop Kitchen + Bar (Palm Springs, California)

Instead of the midcentury style so popular in Palm Springs, Workshop Kitchen + Bar opts for a bold mix of industrial and ecclesiastical design. Concrete “side chapels” flank a communal table underneath a 27-foot peaked ceiling. The exposed pendant lights are by .PSLAB.

Sasaki realized that with limited floor space, he couldn’t be bound by assigned roles for each room. He concentrated on airy, open, and overlapping environments.

Sasaki also loosened up the potentially confining space with an excess of natural light. High windows in the main living area bath the space in natural illumination, while the staggered series of smaller windows in the children’s rooms function like portholes.

After the six-month project, Sasaki received the highest compliment possible; the family told him the space energized the children and brought the family together. While it’s not exactly a yard with a white picket fence, the re-imagined space gave the family room to expand.

When architect Katsutoshi Sasaki was presented with the challenge of carving out a home for a two-child family in what was ostensibly leftover land, he pivoted. Instead of focusing on the three meter width, he played with length and height to create a light-filled, wood-clad home that used its inherent limitations to its advantages.

Field + Supply takes place at the Black Barn in High Falls, New York. Brad Ford, the event's organizer sought to feature designers who produce modern forms using traditional techniques as well as retailers who offer expertly curated shops. The Commons, whose pieces are shown here, specializes in selling housewares made in the USA. "In my experience, design fairs sometimes take themselves a little too serious," Ford says. "I thought it would be fun to shake things up a bit, but still have an amazing group of makers who are incredibly talented and well respected in the area of design."

What do you wish was easier to make and source in the USA?

Extremes exist in the production of home goods. There are either very small-scale artisans or established mass producers; our challenge is finding and supporting those who wish to operate somewhere in the middle.
