Swedish producer Källemo’s furniture collection has always been an eclectic mix of strong designs with an artistic twist. The brand’s popular National Geographic cabinet—designed by Mats Theselius to store his beloved magazines—has been in production since 1991, and the 25th anniversary is celebrated with a limited edition clad in linen printed with foliage. Theselius has also added a base in patinated brass with two drawers for maps.

National Stadium (Kaohsiung, Taiwan: 2009)

Japanese architect Toyo Ito’s coiled dragon of a design, with solar panels for scales, was a bold statement for sustainable design when it was inaugurated for the World Games. Nearly 75% of the building’s energy needs are met with solar power, and the woven grid of pipes calls to mind not so much a reptilian coldness but a fabric wrapped around the crowd.

National September 11 Memorial Museum (Davis Brody Bond)

Built with archives and remnants from that fateful day, the emotionally gripping structure by Davis Brody Bond has been described as "cathedral-like" in its intensity and solemnity. Steven Davis, a partner at DBB who will be one of the architects leading the Archtober tour, told Dwell earlier this year that the space presented an intriguing challenge. “If you think about what we had as a site, and that a traditional museum is an icon containing exhibits, this is the inverse. The exhibit is the icon.”

While in Nelson’s office, she spent six weeks in the Soviet Union for the American National Exhibition of 1959, alongside other midcentury luminaries like Charles and Ray Eames and Buckminster Fuller. This titanium and glass dome-shaped National Centre for the Performing Arts Opera House was a point of contention when it debuted in late 2007 because many people felt its egg-like structure, designed by French architect Paul Andreu, disrupted the feng shui of the capital. Check their schedule to catch touring orchestras, ballet troupes, and of course, Peking opera.

Made with a sensitivity to its site, the white, faceted structure pops out against a sylvan landscape of grass and greenery further afield. The elevated edges seek to reduce the amount of points touching upon the biotope meadow.

The 301-square-foot cabin is situated on 99 acres on Bruny Island, an island off the coast of Tasmania. For the exterior, the architects have chosen materials that "comply with the Bushfire Attack Level of 19," they explain, including bushfire resistant wood and zincalume metal. The cabin collects its own rainwater—storage tanks are underground for an uncluttered look—and the roof sports solar panels.
