The Kingston House abuts a rock shelf upon which architects Aaron Roberts and Thomas Bailey once sat, dreaming up ideas for the design.

The Opdahl House, designed by Edward Killingsworth for Richard and Joyce Opdahl, is located on the island of Naples, in Long Beach, California, and the design responds to the constraints imposed by the compact site.Unlike the neighbors, whose homes unflinchingly abut their property lines, Killingsworth set the Opdahl House 42 feet back from the street, dedicating half of the lot to a dramatic entryway that includes a carport, garden, and reflecting pool. The effect is one of entering a private sanctuary.

Set on a two-acre site abutting Lake Upton in the Hudson Valley, the Clinton Corners Residence is carefully sited to respond to the lake and maximize privacy.

The back staircase abuts a glass facade overlooking the backyard, allowing plenty of light into the kitchen area above. The art hanging on the wall is by artist Julie Thevenot.

There are few walls in the home that abut, making it difficult to place this neon sculpture—untitled (to the real Dan Hill)—by Dan Flavin.

The dining table, an original design by Burnette, is surrounded by stools that belonged to a previous owner.

The home opens up to expansive seaside views to the west, while its street-facing, eastern facade is obscured by trees. The firm notes that the architects "conservatively [punched] openings to protect the residence from the noise and visual clutter of the abutting busy Highway 1."

“Stacey’s property abuts an artists’ colony, so she didn’t want the container to wall off her friends, so we used a bamboo hedge behind it as a way of protecting it from sun yet remaining welcoming to her neighbors.”

In the kitchen, white concrete counters top white cabinetry and abut a tile accent wall. The streamlined palette of the house "originated from a desire to have a space to unwind in that wasn't over-saturated with trends or design features or glossy plastic finishes," say the architects.

Steel-and-wood trellises provide relief from the sun. Abutting the canyon, the narrow backyard has just enough space for a pool, a terrace, and a handful of Ninix loungers by Royal Botania. “Sitting out there, having dinner with all the doors open—that’s all I really want,” says Will.

520 West 28th abuts the High Line, further expressing the city's relationship with this reinvented urban and civic space in Chelsea. Designed with split levels expressed within a handcrafted, steel facade of interlocking chevrons, this 11-story residential apartment building carries with it the spirit of Chelsea’s industrial past.
