"I personally enjoy the unprecedented nature of fluid space at two scales," says Nik Karalis, Woods Bagot CEO and lead designer. "At one level, it’s majestic, and a balance to the coastal landscape. On the other, the scale is intimate, with highly crafted details of material and spatial contrast."

A longtime Dwell contributor who grew up near the sea and now lives in London, Iain Aitch covers the point where art, architecture, and people meet. Writing about a Swedish surf shack inspired him to dig out the 1963 movie Beach Party, and wonder ifhis own Swedish great-grandfather ever conquered the waves.

Most-admired landscape designer: “Nek Chand, who built the eccentric Rock Garden in Chandigarh, India, from the rubble created as Le Corbusier’s designs were built in that city.”

Good Mod and Airbnb’s Environments team conducted lengthy research to arrive at pieces that stay put if users rest their feet on an accompanying coffee table—designed by Airbnb and fabricated by NK Build in Seattle—and that are comfortable for people of varying shapes and sizes.

The immersive resort experience stems from a fictitious history of four Keemala clans—Earth, Wanderer, Sky, and Nest, each with its corresponding lodging. The Pa-Ta-Pea (Earth) Clan is represented by the Clay Pool Cottages, each with views of the rainforest from the outdoor terrace. Just beyond lie the lands of the Khon-Jorn (Wanderer) Clan with luxe tents with plush interiors, monsoon and outside showers, and a stand-alone tub; the tent can be entirely unzipped for full jungle immersion. From the Rung-Nok (Nest) Clan come thatched domes resting high above with individual lap pools, grand terraces, and warm interiors melding wood and stone.

Here's a quick peek at one of the corridors, up one level and inside the pineapple wall. As you can see, the orange glow gives the gallery a kind of warmth, but the view out the big windows is still what dominates. Unlike most convention centers, which really could be anywhere, this one does try quite hard, and successfully, to connect to the exterior world. Lyon and his design partner Nik Karalis of Woods Bagot made a world tour of convention centers, a grim prospect indeed. "Convention centers are really boring." Lyon recounted. "In five minutes you're asleep. They're like Greyhound bus stations at 3 AM. And about as architecturally adventurous." Image courtesy

We end with one of the guests of honor at the NK Inredning party, Spanish designer Jaime Hayón, who unveiled a whole slew of new items at the fair, including pieces for Fritz Hansen and Sé (sneak peek slideshow coming soon). His words of advice for young designers just starting out: "Focus on your identity, where you come from. We are all unique—don't let outside influences change you."

There's more Stockholm design coverage to come, please stay tuned!
