Church at St. John’s Abbey (Collegeville, Minnesota, 1961)

In 1950, Abbot Baldwin Dworschak solicited forward-thinking designs from leading architects to remake his Minnesota church and create a monument to the service of God. Breuer answered the call. There's a certain majesty to the bell tower greeting the faithful, a massive panel supported by a curvaceous stand. That Breuer then follows it up with the church itself, with a massive wall of hexagonal stained glass and concrete tresses, makes this a classic.

Braun HL 70 desktop fan by Reinhold Weiss amd Jurgen Greubel (1971) in white.

According to Kapos, "The design is a revision of Weiss's iconic HL 1 Multiwind desk fan issued a decade earlier, registering Braun's shift of the late 60's from 'New Objectivism' towards what might be called technological expressivism. Pristine white replaces the austere palate of greys; form is reduced to the primitive cylinder; functional controls are simplified; a transparent cradle, giving a gravity defying appearance, replaces the fixed stem and base arrangement of the earlier design."

This object is held in MoMA's permanent collection; this example is fully functional and in excellent condition, and comes with packaging for £200.

The couple coveted this Percival Lafer sofa for years, and a friend eventually bought it for them as a gift. "I love those colors of the '70s. Nothing against modernism, to each their own but I wanted color, and so we leaned into that palette with this old, harvest gold leather," says Sean.

“I’ve done shelves in front of windows here and there throughout my life,” says Lanigan, who grew up in a hippie commune in the ‘70s, where plants were always hanging in the windows. “I grew up in a geodesic dome my parents built. That organic ‘70s design is very much a touchstone for me.” Beside nostalgia, this choice offers extra accessible shelving and blocks a boring driveway view while still letting in light.

We started with this art , my client says this painting is from Aktau ( a city in western Kazakhstan ) , her family owned it for many years, while they were living in Aktau , she recalls this time as a very happy one. My husband is also from Aktau, so this painting became so close and personal to me, and I realized this is the best starting point.

Firewood abounds at this historic homestead that was converted from a neglected farm in rural Germany into a sustainable and modern vacation village by an artist couple from Amsterdam. The sauna is powered by the stacked firewood outside, which keeps it at 70 degrees -- a warm, enveloping temperature that is gentler on the circulatory system.

Harper sits on the porch just off the entrance. James notes that the children spend their time “swimming in the dam, feeding the chickens, and riding their ponies or bikes. It’s really just the simple stuff that we had when we grew up in the late ’70s and ’80s."

My sources of inspiration ultimately led to the kitchen concept.
The work of Romanian artist Constantin Brancusi guided my thinking: his search for essence (expressed through pure lines and elemental forms ) resonated deeply with my approach.
It was the spark behind this moodboard and the soul of the space.
