When Abbie and Bill Burton hired Marmol Radziner to design their prefab weekend home, their two requests were “simple-simple, replaceable materials,” says Abbie—such as concrete floors (poured offsite in Marmol Radziner's factory) and metal panel siding—and “the ability to be indoors or outdoors with ease.” Deep overhangs provide shade and protection from rain, so the Burtons can leave their doors open year-round and hang out on their 70-foot-long deck even in inclement weather. They visit the house once a month, usually for a week at a time, with Vinnie and Stella, their rescue Bernese Mountain dogs. Their two adult children occasionally join them. The couple hopes to one day retire here.

Located just off the kitchen, this room was originally designed for dining—the adjustable Ligne Roset Crescendo coffee table can be raised to 28.75 inches—but most days Bill

and Abbie prefer to eat outside or at their casual Caesarstone-topped kitchen island. Today the space serves as a sunny reading spot and guest room, with a convertible futon (from Ligne Roset, since discontinued) and a set of leather-and-steel Paulistano armchairs from Design Within Reach.

“For our personal space, both my husband and I wanted a main bedroom and bathroom that felt like a retreat or an elevated hotel room,” shares Abbie of their new second floor suite.

For the seating area, the couple selected a Charles sofa by Antonio Citterio for B&B Italia in addition to CH07 Shell chairs by Hans Wegner, a PK61 coffee table by Poul Kjærholm, and a Nesta rug from Design Within Reach. The dining table, an original design by Burnette, is surrounded by stools that belonged to a previous owner.

“My perspective is heavily weighted on art and finding those special individualistic touches to add to a space,” says designer and homeowner Abbie Naber. “Sometimes it’s a statement piece of art that hangs on the wall. Other times, what shines might be the styling items we throw in at the end,” shares Abbie of her creative process.

Another color-infused space, the new second floor office of Abbie’s husband Malik, includes a rich green accent wall — a later decision. “I felt good about knowing we had green downstairs already selected,” Abbie says of the bold choice. “I think where I chose color, I knew there would be some repetition.”

Extending the home’s lower level made room for Abbie’s spacious new home office. Clean, simple finishes provide a clear and composed space from which to work and create.

The laundry room provided the perfect opportunity for Abbie to experiment with color. “The mustard dashed hexagon tile paired with the terrazzo countertops and plywood cabinetry creates a less industrial feel for a utility space,” she shares.

At the end of the day, Abbie, Stella and some of the Marmol Radziner staff gathered in the kitchen. "You can see the range hood in the background, the white tiled back wall of the kitchen, and seam in the ceiling where the two modules are joined," says Bill.
