Kelsey: 1890 Spindrift Drive One of Dwell's go-to bloggers, Diana Moss, stumbled upon these great old photographs in the LIFE magazine archive. They depict a house in La Jolla, California, designed by architect William Kesling in 1946-47. The house was built for "retired bachelor Walton MacConnell," who, LIFE wrote, "settled down in the elegant, sunny little town… As a setting for this life he has built himself a dramatic, glossy, $40,000 home which hugs the edge of a 50-foot seaside cliff." It's very mod, and accented by more than one bathing beauties.

Jens Martin Skibsted salvaged an 1890s house just outside of Copenhagen, reworking it with architect Jürgen Mayer H. The structure is a retreat for Jens, his wife, Naomi, and their children. The dining table was designed by him to accommodate 18; the legs were produced by HAY, as were the Shanghay molded plywood chairs. “The house has so many things,” explains Jens. “Every corner has a story.”

“We take houses built in the ’70s, ’80s, or ’90s, and we make them look like the 1870s or 1880s or 1890s,” explains Jack Alessio Pretto of Retroject Projects.

Beverly O’Mara, an artist and teacher, and Mark Uriu, owner of a residential painting and finishing company, needed a place to work from home. So, in 2014 the couple embarked on transforming a 2,700-square-foot loft located in an 1890 Wells Fargo horse-and-carriage facility in Jersey City, New Jersey, into a flexible art studio and residence.

Before: Marina Barnes and Thomas Pittlik bought an 1890 rowhouse in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 2019. The living room was at the front of the house, overlooking the sidewalk. The original wood floors were in place, but the front wall was covered in fake brick and the ceiling had popcorn texture.

Construction on the three-story castle—modeled after a German fortress along the Rhine River—began in 1890 and, due to financial difficulties, took until 1913 to complete. The building changed hands multiple times since then, until the Gainses bought it in 2019.
