Church at St. John’s Abbey (Collegeville, Minnesota, 1961) In 1950, Abbot Baldwin Dworschak solicited forward-thinking designs from leading architects to remake his Minnesota church and create a monument to the service of God. Breuer answered the call. There's a certain majesty to the bell tower greeting the faithful, a massive panel supported by a curvaceous stand. He penned the cover story for this issue, featuring Nicolas Roche’s kaleidoscopic Parisian home. “Roche’s apartment truly encapsulates the virtues of any design lover: rare and bizarre vintage finds, shots of quirk and color, and some good old-fashioned problem-solving. The owners found this cabin, built in 1959, after looking to fix up a "weird 70s contemporary,

According to Kapos, "The design is a revision of Weiss's iconic HL 1 Multiwind desk fan issued a decade earlier, registering Braun's shift of the late 60's from 'New Objectivism' towards what might be called technological expressivism. Pristine white replaces the austere palate of greys; form is reduced to the primitive cylinder; functional controls are simplified; a transparent cradle, giving a gravity defying appearance, replaces the fixed stem and base arrangement of the earlier design." This object is held in MoMA's permanent collection; this example is fully functional and in excellent condition, and comes with packaging for £200.

The couple coveted this Percival Lafer sofa for years, and a friend eventually bought it for them as a gift. "I love those colors of the '70s. Nothing against modernism, to each their own but I wanted color, and so we leaned into that palette with this old, harvest gold leather," says Sean.

Manufactured with up to 70 percent recycled steel, the hybrid prefab Graham Residence by Blue Sky Building System limits construction waste to the factory, where it's recycled.

To tackle the challenges of a steep slopping site and a tight budget, architect Dan Rockhill used a slatted exterior screen of Cumaru wood to shields inexpensive metal sidings for this Kansas home.

“I’ve done shelves in front of windows here and there throughout my life,” says Lanigan, who grew up in a hippie commune in the ‘70s, where plants were always hanging in the windows. “I grew up in a geodesic dome my parents built. That organic ‘70s design is very much a touchstone for me.” Beside nostalgia, this choice offers extra accessible shelving and blocks a boring driveway view while still letting in light.

The kitchen in 1220 E. 12th Street House features floor-to-ceiling windows that look out on a serene grove of oak trees. The project was designed by Studio 804, a graduate student architecture and design program led by Dan Rockhill at the University of Kansas.

Perpetually Devastated spent a long time looking specifically for a 1968 Airstream for the Dunhams. This model features rectangular windows. (In the later ‘60s and early ‘70s, they become oval.)

Torontonians Dan and Diane Molenaar head north to Drag Lake when they need a weekend away from urban life—though they brought some of the city with them. The mirrored windows that circle the cottage were recycled from two office towers in Toronto.
