The heart of this home is the kitchen and creating a large kitchen in a small space was a challenge that we happily accepted. Neutral cabinetry and countertops opened up a once closed off kitchen typical of the 70’s. Blending the island wood tones with the hardwood floor allows the eye to carry straight though to the large windows along the back of the home. The hood fan is definitely a focal point of this space and we had fun curving out the normal boxiness of this kitchen appliance.

For her DesignMarch submissions, she accepted a challenge from her uncle to work with Icelandic sheep skin, famous for its long outer coat. The result, a bench and a set of stools showing the versatility of the material. Like the three $20K House projects built before theirs, the student team behind the Pattern Book House worked together to present a prototype of what such a home could look like. "There had been some community backlash to some of the previous prototypes," Grubb says. "We wanted to design something that the community would accept." To that end, they used a rain screen on the exterior walls to mimic siding on the area's traditional homes and chose cedar, as opposed to corrugated metal like other teams had done, so the locals could “compare it to a honey shed," Grubb adds.
