“The old living room and balcony on the sixth floor were transformed into the master bedroom with an en-suite open bathroom,” Hammer said. Flos lighting illuminates the space above the vanity.

The office space above the kitchen looks out onto the great room.

Houldin, 10, curls up in the playroom nook which is directly under a side skylight that Pulltab added in order to make the interior rooms inhabitable, as per New York City building code. The custom millwork around the window seat is painted in Rainy Day by Fine Paints of Europe.

Sleeping space is adventurously tucked away in an alcove above the kitchen, accessible by a track ladder that slides along a rail mounted above the counter.

The compact 712-square-foot cottage sits on top of a 430-square-foot workshop, where Baker’s firm prototypes and produces custom furnishings for his practice. “Not only is there room for more density on most residential blocks in San Francisco, but, if thoughtfully conceived, it also enriches our communities and makes our cities more resilient,” Baker says.

In the living room, Nunnerley added classic details, like custom crown moldings and baseboards, but used wide oak floorboards (rather than the traditional parquet) to give the space a slightly industrial, loft-like feeling. Richard Serra’s My Curves are Not Mad hangs above the monumental, low sofa she custom-designed to seat six comfortably. It inhabits its own niche, which she built so it wouldn’t interrupt her classic square.

Bar-height furniture invites students and guests to eat as well as work in the blue area. The entire area is connected when viewed from above.

Uniqlo installation (2014) For this colorful concept that took over 51 Uniqlo stores, starting with the brand's flagship in Ginza, Moureaux hung rows of paper strangs so that they would pick up passing breezes.

In a converted church in Connecticut, a modern fireplace and mantel design incorporates a ledge that functions as a bench and place for holding artwork or extra firewood. Above the fireplace, a Warhol collage is surrounded by a papier-mâché sculpture of no special provenance, a Vigliaturo glass piece, and a Picasso plate.

Breaking up the roof planes and concrete floor plates allowed the house to blend into the landscape. The wall that wraps the building ensures it is still a single, coherent form.

A serrated transom window above the closet in the children’s room floods the hallway with natural light. “By moving some closets and shrinking the size of the bedrooms, we were able to get three bedrooms out of two without taking away any floor space from the central living area,” Stageberg says. The closets feature extensive built-ins and the ceiling height helps the smaller rooms feel expansive.

In the master bathroom, an oversize tub is graced with a generous skylight above it.

Up above the sitting room a duo of Eames shell chairs and a bank of luminous operable windows await a pair of weary readers.

Hachigian and Day in the living room/screening room, which opens onto a terrace above a reconstructed garage. The living-room table with a resin-and-acrylic top was designed by Hachigian’s brother, Garo.

The industrial aesthetic might be strongest in the second of the two bathrooms, where a wireglass shower divider and metal washbasin support were custom fabricated by the Czech workshop kurel. The tap is from Bonigio, the washbasin itself is from Sanindusa, and the lamp is another Tolomeo Micro Parete from Artemide.

Inside, just off the entrance, pendant lights from Woonfabriek hang in the triple-height central hall.

The second story above the great room will house two guest bedrooms.
