The playroom later became Xenia’s office.

The Miller House and Garden features a custom-made sofa in the open-plan living area designed by Saarinen with textiles by Girard. The home was widely published and is in part credited for the popularity of conversation pits in the 1950s and 1960s.

A mosaic tile wall softens the laboratory-like effect of the glossy kitchen cabinets.

Tyler and Brown’s living room is packed with furniture yet manages to avoid feeling cluttered. The coffee table is a Nelson Platform Bench from Herman Miller, and the low tables are Tablo Tables by Magnus Löfgren for Design House Stockholm. The Nørreskoven fireplace is from Cleanburn Stoves.

Inside, a Herman Miller bench creates a small sitting area. A rich collection of artwork, amassed over the years by the Saleks' mother, Mahshad, is visible at every turn. The flooring throughout is a warm walnut.

From the previous owners, Lange spied several key pieces of vintage furniture, including two rare George Nelson Thin Edge dressers for Herman Miller.

Herman Miller Aeron Chair Saval says this chair was originally created for residents of nursing homes who spent too much of the day sitting down. “Bill Stumpf, a great designer at Herman Miller, came up with a chair that was way too futuristic for a nursing home, but it ended up being incredibly functional for dot-com workers, who would also be sitting for really long hours.”

Sofie and her husband searched high and low for a vintage Herman Miller piece, finally finding a 30-year-old Eames lounge chair to complement the family’s living room. The carpet is by Hay, the painting is by Claus Carstensen, and the lamp by Jielde.

The Aeron office chair, designed by Don Chadwick and Bill Stumpf for Herman Miller in 1994, is a classic addition to modern office design. In the Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection, the chair is not only ergonomic, but green too—it's 94% recyclable.

Locale Workstation by Herman Miller In retrospect, the inspiration for Locale—a bustling high street in London—is literally and figuratively perfect for the collaborative workspace system. Designer Jason Miller adorned the dinnerware (which also comes in dessert size) with a jewelry motif, adding a touch of class to your tabletop.

The Eames' modular desk and storage collection is another timeless staple. Developed out of the work the duo did for an 1949 exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts, the set features industrial-inspired cross-supports, uprights, and perforated panels.

Eames Walnut Stools by Herman Miller, $899 each These classic pieces by beloved midcentury designers Charles and Ray Eames can be used interchangeably as a stool, side table, or plant stand. With pleasing geometric details reminiscent of chess-board pieces, the solid walnut designs have been made and manufactured in the USA since 1960.

Old Herman Miller posters hang on a nearby wall. In the living room, a yellow fiberglass stool by Nanna Ditzel sits alongside a French chain-link floor lamp from the 1940s.

Jason and Laura Miller-Smith tapped Cover Architecture and EEK Studio to update their Buff and Hensman midcentury home with custom casework, ribbed glass, and a grand fireplace while staying true to the original plans.

In the living room Daphne the dog keeps company with a Case Study Day Bed from Modernica, a LCM chair by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller, and a painting by the Brooklyn artist Joyce Kim.
