Like many of Benepe's projects, planting P.S. 111's playground is more than a quality of life improvement. The grass and other flora help absorb flood water during storms, relieving pressure on the city's drainage systems.

The 111 Navy chairs are exact replicas of the beloved aluminum originals, down to the faux weld points on the backside.

At P.S. 111, the Trust for Public Land transformed an asphalt eyesore into a green sanctuary for New York City schoolchildren.

One of the final steps is to install the H-Brace and feet, both fabricated on another mold.

Eight to ten trailer truckloads of PET bales—each measuring 80 cubic feet and consisting of 20,000 bottles—arrive for processing every weekday.

Each Navy chair begins life as 13 pounds of rPET plastic pellets, which are melted down and injected into the chair mold, a multiton device that functions like a gigantic waffle iron.

After the rPET mixture is heated and transformed via injection molding into a chair, a robotic arm removes it from the specially designed mold.

Over ten years, the UnPET process will prevent the release of one million metric tons of carbon dioxide—the equivalent of taking 215,000 cars off the road.

During the injection process, each chair is stamped on the underside to read, "Help your bottle become something extraordinary again."

To make the most of the 111 square meters of living space, built-in storage is integrated throughout.

For ventilation, many of the valley-facing windows, measuring 10 ½ feet tall, feature a section at the top or bottom that opens. Navy 111 chairs, part of Emeco’s Coca-Cola edition, sit at the heads of a Restoration Hardware table; WAC track lights provide illumination. The floors are made of poured-in-place concrete.

BASF also highlighted behind-the-scenes products such as its adhesives. In our February 2011 "Process" story about the 111 Navy Chair by Emeco, we chronicled the journey of 111 plastic bottles being turned into the chair, which included a trip to BASF in Tennessee, where the recycled PET is combined with glass fiber and color pigment before being injection molded.

The pavilion measures 11.8' x 8.3' x 11.1' for a total of 96.8 square feet, and it can be transported via a flatbed truck.

Emeco also introduced their soon-to-launch counter-height version of their famous Navy 111 Chair, which is made from recycled plastic bottles.
