The "Tippy Cup Rain Chain" teaches the children about water conservation.

Mithun designed the tree house so that it would tread lightly on the land. The firm originally considered prefabricating the entire structure offsite but, in the research process, concluded that craning large modules into place would potentially harm the canopy. A combination of a bolted-together prefab structure and site-built wood housing yielded the least intrusive construction option. The Summit Bechtel Reserve is located in West Virginia's coal mining country. The architects looked to the local structures—bridges, mining apparatus, and other industrial buildings—to inform the tree house's design. A 166-ton Cor-Ten steel megastructure supports the 125-foot-tall building. The use of regionally appropriate materials, like steel and black locust wood, was important to the architects.

Visitors scale a series of outdoor staircases that wind their way up the structure. Volume and Studio Terpeluk turned the risers into a teaching moment about energy use and the impact of every day activities.

Mithun wanted to engage the scouts with all elements of the forest: the floor, the canopy, and a perspective above the tree tops. In one of the viewing rooms, visitors get the feeling of being fully surrounded by leaves.

The brightly colored Wall Hooks, made of powder coated steel, embody that in their utilitarian function and small size.

The Vinyl Lover Why not commit to a turntable built to last a lifetime? The Scout Jr. by VPI is a newly introduced, simplifed version of the popular Scout turntable that has been made for over a decade. The Scout Jr. is a belt-drive turntable with a fully isolated AC synchronous motor, a nine-inch stainless-steel tonearm, and a premounted Ortofon 2M Red cartridge. A separate phono preamp is needed. Scout Jr. isn’t cheap, but it represents excellent value: Many products from VPI’s initial production runs are still in daily use. $1,499.

SR Bicycle by Scout Regalia. Los Angeles–based studio Scout Regalia collaborated with makers in Philadelphia, Denver, and Alpine, New York, to fashion a steel-framed, powder-coated hybrid bike.

The couple sourced midcentury furniture and dishware from Toronto dealers like Mid Century Modern Toronto and Inabstracto. They also loved Etsy sellers Mimi La Rouleuse, Mid Age Vintage DE, Happy Moose Vintage, Mrs. Marvellous, and The Art of Object.

He is fond of telling the story of a large stone table he bought from an antique dealer. When the deliveryman arrived, his truck couldn’t fit through the gate, so Lolo hauled the table into the courtyard himself, inching it into place over several days.

The house has smart locks by August, Caséta wireless controls by Lutron, and a hub security system by Scout.

"I wanted to make things look really nice and not spend a lot of money, but it takes time. It's not something that happens overnight," says Alex of scouting for furniture and decor.

Sphinx, the family Carolina dog, scouts the perimeter of the Concrete Collaborative pavers in the backyard. The pavers were installed on a slight angle to channel water to the surrounding gravel, lawn, and planting beds. This substantially lowers the landscape's water demand. Perforated PVC pipes and a pump move excess rainfall (which would otherwise go to storm drains) into an underground basin where it can later drain off. Redwood fencing reflects the material palette of the interior and creates visual continuity around the backyard.

Bullock’s projects include the master plan for the Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles’s Camp Lakota, in Frazier Park, California, completed in 2016.

Caroline found the backsplash tile at Los Azulejos in Tecate, MX, while she was on a scouting trip for work. She texted Joel a photo: “He was like, ‘I don’t know, it looks a little terrazzo-y,’” says Caroline with a laugh. “But it turned out to be subtle enough.” The team actually had to install the backsplash twice because the first time, the red grout stained the tile surface. Joel and Caroline drove back to Mexico to purchase a second batch, with which they used white grout.

Designer Cortney Bishop used antique Serapi rugs—a type of Persian carpet—that she sourced from a local dealer to guide the design of this residence in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Gaby sourced many of the interior furnishings from salvaged goods dealers and reclamation yards. The hanging rail in the surf room and several pieces of furniture in the living/dining space came from Retrouvius.

Sited in Brooklyn's Williamsburg neighborhood, Publisher's Loft has been remodeled by Büro Koray Duman for a book publisher and furniture dealer couple, who share 2,500 books.

This Mallorcan villa was Pawson's firm's first full architectural project. It was originally built for German art dealers, who Pawson had met by chance on an Italian beach. Acclaimed for his minimalism, this beautiful abode is no different.
