The wardrobes in the girls' rooms are secretly connected through one cabinet door—an example of the whimsy and wonder Welsch infused throughout the home.

Located in Queensland, Australia, the residence was created by Sarah Waller Design, an architectural studio that’s based in the Queensland suburb of Doonan. The glass pavilion–style home was designed for Sarah Waller and her family and sits on top of a polished concrete slab. Inspired by the midcentury era, it looks out to the Noosa Valley golf course.

The Dodo Van has seats for the transport of up to six people. The side entrance leads directly to the kitchenette area behind the driver's seat.

The double bed is located in the rear of the van so it has access to the views afforded by the open doors.

The plywood joinery conceals a portable table for eating and working, a bed for two people, a kitchenette, and ample storage space. The interior has been designed to be flexible enough to adapt to different everyday situations, solving the basic needs of living.

Another challenge was adapting the design to the very specific shape of the van—something that involved many tests during the construction process.

The clients—Diego, a lawyer, and Tatiana, an environmental engineer—were both born and raised in Guayaquil, a small port city located in Santa Elena Península of Ecuador located an hour and a half from the coast.

“There’s no right answer except to play and experiment,” says interior designer Jonathan Adler in regards to the Shelter Island getaway he shares with his husband, fellow design expert Simon Doonan. Custom ceramic wall tiles, a few plants, and a self-made rug, stool, and coffee table all add to the home's inimitable decor.

Maximalism: Bold, Bedazzled, Gold, and Tasseled Interiors

Living in a remote cabin poses challenges in the cold winter months. “The latest challenge is keeping the two 1000-liter backup rainwater tanks in the shed at the back of the house from freezing,” says the owner. “I experimented this winter with installing a doc-fan ventilation system in the connecting wall that pushes heat from inside the house to the shed to keep it hovering just above freezing point.”

The tables, pendant lights, and rocker are vintage. Adler and Doonan used scaffolding from the house’s construction to build the bookshelf.

A custom pattern and color combination of FLOR carpet tiles adds variety to the flooring. Berlin shelving with Dorian bins adds functional storage.

“We are delighted to see that our ambition to create this innovative sanctuary for adventurers has been realized,” says James Dodson of SPINN Architects. “We hope that the cabin will continue to be enjoyed and will encourage more people to visit the stunning location in the future.”

The Musee D’Orsay in Paris has turned its clock tower into an accommodation.

The Sallin residence was designed by Richard Dorman, a lesser-known contemporary of John Lautner and Craig Ellwood (whose design is the focal point of our Hollywood Renovation Backstory series). Dorman designed a handful of residences and commercial buildings in the Los Angeles region in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, and relocated to Santa Fe in 1975.
