Epic Sail

To reduce heat load and provide shade, DeSalvo initially tracked down a sail system from Sun Shade Australia. But the $6,000 price tag had the architect and contractor designing their own version out of Mermet solar screen fabric. It was fabricated by Covers Unlimited for $1,800.

Kelsey: AnOther Kind of Selfie

While the awkwardly angled, lips-pursed cell phone "selfie" may be a strictly 21st century iteration of the self-portrait genre, it's worth noting that even famous people—and professional photographers—have engaged in the practice from time to time. AnOther magazine has rounded up a few such gems, from a Roloflex family snapshot by Jackie Kennedy with her husband and sister-in-law to Cecil Beaton's selfie with Mick Jagger, on set in 1968.

Visitors are meant to progress from level to level at their leisure. “The ritual of the sauna is going into the sauna box, jumping into the cold water, and then relaxing,” says Kampshoff. “All concrete elements are simply stacked on another and there is a gap of light between each one, offering breathing space.”

The one-man sauna is created by three architects at modulorbeat, Marc Günnewig, Jan Kampshoff, and Sebastian Gatz. They were inspired by the nature of the former factory site, which reflects the changing state of manufacturing in the region. “When we arrived, looking for a location, [we thought] it was so beautiful how the nature came back to the industrial site,” says Kampshoff. “We transformed it into a space with an urban quality.”

The view from the top of the tower. “Work is leaving our region and we have a huge area that we don’t know how to develop,” says Kampshoff. “If you look into the history of work in this region, we always had big companies. It’s all disappeared. We came up with the idea of how we deal with these work sites. The sauna is the opposite of work—it’s relaxing."

Glass Chair for “Man Machine” Exhibition at Galerie kreo

One of Grcic’s latest material experiments allowed him to challenge the audience. “It’s not provocation or something that is impossible, It’s a serious investigation of what happens if we make furniture from glass. You said you’d feel strange or irritated sitting on it; it’s a very strong reaction to something as simple as a chair. It means that I can still make a chair that would irritate you. It’s quite amazing.” Photo by Galerie Kreo.
