Guess used inexpensive graded pine plywood so that he would get heavy grain patterns on the surfaces. One of the main goals in the kitchen was simplicity. To that end, he opted for a poured-in-place concrete island. "We didn’t know if we could afford to do that, but we found a great subcontractor [Nate Francis of Countertop Creations] here who had never really built anything like that," Guess says. "Because he was interested in giving it a shot and adding it to his portfolio, he didn’t charge an exorbitant amount of money because it was sort of an experiment for him as well." The kitchen features a GE Profile refrigerator and KitchenAid range, microwave, and dishwasher. The sink and faucet are from Kohler. The project's builder was Joe Doherty with Custom Homecrafters of Austin.

The "secret room" has become a special space for the couple's grandchildren to enjoy. It is their playroom as well as a spot for special sleepovers. "I guess the short, sloped walls are a real draw for kids, like a playhouse, but with WiFi," Hixton says.

A tight construction budget informed the choices Sean Guess made as he designed a house for a couple in Austin, Texas. Budget-minded materials, like the James Hardie fiber-cement siding, helped hold construction costs to $130 per square foot. Sherwin-Williams’s Cyberspace hue colors the exterior and Parakeet coats the custom kitchen cabinets by Austin Wood Works. The planter is made from Cor-Ten steel.

While the townhouse is 35 feet deep, the widest space inside is 8-feet-1 inch and the narrowest point is two feet wide. As one might guess, the bathrooms probably feel exceptionally small.

Before: The provenance of the zebra-striped tile in the bathroom was anyone’s guess. "I think there had been a previous tenant there who had bling-ed out the space in a 1970s bachelor pad sort of way," says McGee.

It almost seems as if at some point it had been a triangular building with the gas station under it. I love the way it just sits on top of the small house, the wooden lattice work on the roof mirroring the patterns of the framing of the windows. My guess is that it was built in the 1960s.

You'd never guess by looking at it but Hadid's 1993 Fire Station for Vitra was in fact designed to be a working fire station. Vitra had experienced a devastating factory fire in 1980s in which half of the halls burned down and production came to a complete and total stop. The local town did not then have a fire station and so trucks from the next town over had to come to put it out.

2.5 KG CHAIR by BJÖRN DAHLSTRÖM

Weighing in at, you guessed it, 2.5 kilograms Dahlström's chair weights about half of the industry average. He suggests that by stripping away at the mass of our objects we could achieve massive change—for 50,000 of these chairs 150 tons of processed wood could be saved.

We love a good renovation story—and more often than not, the "before" shots tell us more about a project than the final result. You'd never guess this dated living room was once the state of the Portland, Oregon, stunner we feature in the Sept. 2016 issue ("Backstory: Across the Board").

We'd hazard a guess that Quebecois shepherd's pie–Pate Chinois, the name of the collection by Domison– isn't the first thing that comes to mind when viewing the Montage sofa. The hearty recipe, however, provided tasty inspiration for the designers' mix-and-match of modular arms and backrests. Click here for more information on the Montage sofa.

The twisted “Segal Staircase” (“It’s almost like a ladder that spins around,” explains Jo)—a signature element in the neighborhoods’ homes—got a fresh look, with panelling in front of each stair and stabilizing poles. It also received a striking coat of turquoise paint. “I can’t remember the Pantone color, but needless to say there was a big argument about it for six months,” laughs Jo. “I guess I won.”

If you couldn't guess from his wooden clogs, Pieter Hoff is from Holland, a country built on green energy and democratic desire, largely below sea-level. He's now using mother nature's example to regenerate tree in areas thought to be unsalvageable—like stripmines—with his innovative Groasis waterboxx, the small green pot on the left.

At first glance, you’d never guess this playground was built with recycled wind turbine blades. The prevalence of windmills in the Netherlands inspired architect group 2012Architecten to re-imagine ways to use scrap parts. This playground celebrates Dutch industrial culture with originality, modernity, and most of all – safety. Its simplicity reminds us that imagination is the prerequisite for fun.
