Robertson--with the help of developers Katie Nichols and John Walker, who were heavily involved in the design process--finished the guest bathroom with Modwalls tiles and a sink they found on eBay. They used a piece of marine plywood, leftover from building the front-porch steps, to create a counter on which the sink could sit--and where the family can rest their toothbrushes. To the right of the sink is a Toto dual-flush toilet, which is great for conserving water but has proven problematic for toilet training, as American potty seats aren't designed to fit these Japanese basins.

The kitchen—a customized version of the Dada Tivalì kitchen, designed by Dante Bonuccelli, with a Hi-Line6 hood and island—was imaged as a white monolith that can be hidden behind doors tucked within the framework.

The leftmost cabinet above the Duravit bathtub (equipped with KWC fixtures) occupies the space where a doorway once lead into the living room, creating unnecessary traffic from the home’s public spaces through to the master bedroom.The new bathroom features a minimal palette of white and teak. “It’s able to hold up on boat decks so is good for a bathroom,” Klug says. Emerson House by Brinca Dada is a teeny two-story modernist dream house with floor-to-ceiling sliding doors, mitered glass corners and real, working solar panels powering the lights throughout. It is the brainchild of cofounders Douglas Rollins (a former Toys R’ Us buyer) and Tim Boyle, who named the house for the street he once lived on. The nontoxic dollhouse opens completely, like the classic Fisher-Price yellow playhouse, and closes back up nice and tidy. Come Fall, a whole houseful of little furniture, from a Philippe Starck–like tub, tiny modern chaises and mini minimalist beds, will also be available.
